Comments (5)Hey neighbor. Phormium (Flax) is too wide for that very space unless you go with dwarf types. Most of them will get 4-5' wide and you'll be doging them every time you walk by. You could do good height with 'Tiny Tower' Italian Cypress, they'll stay less than 2' wide but get 20' tall (eventually--they're slow growing). Not the species--they get too big for your space. There's a 'Tiny Tower' in a pot in front of Peets at the Trader Joe's shopping center at Irvine & Newport. You could do a vine but I would stay away from the Cape Honeysuckle. It can get to be a rampant mess. Have a look (also by Trader Joe's) at the Cup of Gold vine Solandra maxima. They have them growing as upright shrubs. A tough plant with nearly year-round huge yellow flowers. The kangaroo paws are stunning, beautiful plants, but they can be tough to grow and seem short-lived around here. They get an infection called "black ink" and are touchy. The water company office in Tustin at Main and Prospect had a bunch of them...but sadly they've mostly died out. They were quite stunning for a couple of years. Another idea for height would be some wrought-iron pieces. You have narrow spot there, so think narrow, vines on structures, but watch the density and tidyness of the vines lest they harbor rats. They are attracted to rampant dense vines as nesting and hiding places in our area. What about some succulents, such as Aeoniums, alternated with the 'Tiny Tower' cypress, with maybe one smaller vine on a trellis? Sorry for limited ideas, but the space is narrow. Narrow spaces between house and concrete are difficult. Sometimes just concrete right up to the house is a better idea in the long run. You have green on the other side of the walkway--do you really need that narrow planter area right next to the house?...See MoreSeeking experts' advice for sarracenia
Comments (16)Gary, Like I told Xuan, I've been to her country. In the highlands, it can get to 100 during the day and drops to 40 even 50 at nite in certain parts. Thats the difference between that and the lowlands where there is no drastic change. She's also right that further north, there may be frost, however she doesn't live that far( she lives in Saigon and Dalat is not that high up ). Chances are, the plant would do better in the highlands, however she lives in the lowlands and from her missive wants the plant there, so the advice was for a lowland location. And yes, if the plants never went into hibernation so to speak, they would slowly decline. A good example would be Oreaphila vs. Minor. When I moved to Central Florida, my Oreaphila did fine during the summer, however they started declining when I kept them out all winter. It wasn't cold enough. My Minor from Lake Okeechobee however not only thrived but they flower twice a year as they are used to the temp being hot damn near all year round....See MoreOld man seeks expert advice
Comments (3)First of all welcome Weldon, lovely to have you join in. Hope you'll stick around. It's Easter weekend so the responses may be a little slow but I'm guessing you'll have more rice pudding help than you may even want! Funnily that is exactly the recipe my husband uses for rice pudding. You two must surf the same web sites! LOL This is a man who does not cook but he was on a mission to make his own rice pudding...fine by me : ) I asked him if he adjusts the recipe at all and he said he adds the beaten egg to the remaining milk and stirs it all together and reduces the heat of the rice mixture to medium low before adding the milk /egg mixture....See MoreCalling all paint experts...please help! Comments (2)Hello, first of all I have SW Pure White on my cabinets and it is definitely a nice white but not as creamy as you think, it reads "pure" white. The inspo pic looks much like a greige, here are a few suggestions on the greige chart. Maybe Balboa Mist? I have classic gray on my walls and it is a warmer gray. I love it....See MoreVicky Vancleave
