Paint Home Decorating Design Dilemma

Please help me understand my vaulted walls!

We moved into this home a few months ago and haven't really settled into it yet, mostly because I'm confused about how to choose paint for these crazy walls, and I'm stuck with decorating until I know my paint colors.

Our house really isn't that big, but the tall walls make it feel gigantic and really remove that cozy feeling I'm used to. I'd like to use different colors on the walls to create a sense of depth. Our home is located in the country on a farm, so I'd love to pull in that farmhouse feel as well.

So far, I know that I'd like to paint the currently-gold accent wall a blue, and I'm interested in doing the other walls in a soft gray. But...do I paint all the tall walls the same color gray, or do I choose a couple different grays to create depth? I'd like to leave the hallways cream...do I also leave the tall walls that attach to the hallways cream? Our ceilings peak at around 15 feet and we're doing the painting ourselves, so if we don't need to paint those two tall walls, we won't.

In an ideal world, I'd like to re-stain the cabinets and trim in a darker, rustic color and replace the light countertops, but a tight budget makes that impossible right now.

Any tips on creating a sense of cozy, rustic warmth would be great -- I'm so lost! (Also, I apologize for all the clutter and the weird placement of office furniture in the kitchen -- that'll probably change at some point). Thank you to anyone who can help me!

No accent walls. All one color. No cold gray anything. Cold colors will make it even colder.

Modern architecture like this is about connecting the interior and exterior. The use of natural materials likecwood and stone.

Use Warm colors and warm natural materials only. Warm whites and creams to tans or warm greens only. Look at SW Sawdust. It’s a great warm browned down green that works well to warm up spaces. And tall ceilings don’t need to be white by default either. A warmer tone there will really help as well.

Thank you so much for your reply! I've thought about warm brown, but the carpet in the living room is a more warmish gray (it has flecks of tan and cream, but is predominantly gray) and I don't want it to clash. I tried finding warmer grays, like Colonnade Gray. Do you think that would still be too cold?

I'd love to repaint the ceiling a warmer color, but we're doing the painting ourselves, and I can't fathom what painting the ceiling would take.

Should the hallways be painted to match the main living area, or could they stay cream?

#1 appears to be for bronze paint on aluminum cladding for the frame and sash with normal double pane Low E glass and a normal 2 7/8 jamb depth plus pine extension jambs to make it 4 9/16", perhaps the interior face of the sash is pine too and probably a pine veneer on the inside face of the interior screen. #2 is for white paint on aluminum cladding for the frame and sash with tempered glass (odd for a typical window) with a 2 7/8" jamb ready for 1 5/16 fir extension jambs, perhaps the interior face of the sash is fir too, and probably a fir veneer on the inside face of the interior screen. Check the model number/name of each window (Axiom?) and be sure they are not replacement windows (I assume they are for new construction). Make sure the window will meet the applicable energy code with the internal gas specified, and internal mullion spacers (Andersen windows need a more energy efficient gas option). Make sure there is one window in each bedroom that meets the emergency escape and rescue minimum opening size. Tempered glass is generally required near doors and if the bottom edge of the pane is below a certain dimension from the floor and the glass pane is larger than a certain size.

I would recommend going throught the attic as a last resort. Ours vents on our steep roof and maintainence is a nightmare!!!! We have to call someone to come out to clean our vent line since the roof is such a steep pitch. We've had trouble with the flaps sticking up and birds getting in the vent line = ewww! = maintenaince call. Put chicken wire over vent to prevent birds = clogged vent = wet clothes = another maintenaince call. This is our current status. This has just been our experience. I'm sure (I hope) there are others that have sucessfully vented through roof. The fans you mention I believe are for those that have a longer vent run and need the extra push to get the air out. Depending on your attic height you may or may not need one. We didn't. Another option is what davey3000 has, a condensing dryer. They do not vent outside and the moisture from cloths collects in a pan or can set up to drain into a floor drain. These appear to be a bit less efficent energy wise but are gentler on clothing. Bosch makes a nice condensing dryer. Good luck in the final stage of your house!! Anyway my 2cents worth.

That may be, but it also may be a grief reaction. When I lost my big yellow long-haired tom, his partner and companion, my little black female tortie steered clear of humans too. He was killed in an accident. She had time to sniff his body, and her reaction when she understood he was 'gone' was so human-like it brought us to tears. It was a look of horror. She kept to herself for several weeks, sitting where they used to sit. Then, she appeared very skittish when she decided she wanted human company for a few more days, and then it seemed like she was over whatever she was working through. I just was super gentle with her, and let her have her space and after that, she became more clingy and wanted more companionship from us. I'm sorry for the loss of your Lucy.

She isn't replacing a double oven, it's a single that's there already. I agree with weedmeister that it is unlikely the builder ran 40 amp wiring to an appliance that only required 20 amps. If one were taking future upgradability into account, this of course would have been the smartest thing to do, but unfortunately that's not how builders think. They do everything to keep construction costs as low as possible. Your electrician will be able to confirm if it's just the breaker that needs changing, or if the wiring needs upgrading as well. Hopefully your house's electrical service has the capacity for that extra 20 amps. If not it will need an upgrade too. If you want to avoid the work, consider whether or not you really need that double oven. If you change your mind and decide to go with a single for your new kitchen, make sure it's rated for 20 amps like your old one.

It doesn't look like you have that much carpet in the living room. That would be fairly cheap to replace so I wouldn't factor that in to your paint decision. I agree with the "no accent wall color" camp. You can rent scaffolding from the orange big box store tool rental for very inexpensive $. It's really worth it for the safety and efficiency factors if you want to DIY. You might have someone evaluate where your can lights are placed and come up with a better scenario. It looks very odd to me and not very practical. Maybe move some of them or install some actual hanging pendants or light fixtures before you paint. The ceiling fan needs a longer down rod also.
