Well, the rug is a little large and a little busy IMO. But regardless of that, you need new bedding. And then what is boring about the space is all of the matching furniture. I would break those pieces up into different bedrooms so that you can mix and match furniture. And then I would put something at the foot of the bed (like a bench) and that will also help to cover up some of that area rug pattern.

I would consider turning the rug in the other direction (if it fits) the bench is a good idea

There are many patterns that will go with your Oriental rug...look for colors that are similar ...blues and creams..Purchase bedding and drapes in a pattern that you love. Put lamps on your night stands or wall lamps above the night stands (this will save room on the night stands for clocks, books,etc). Add artwork. The previous two comments are also good ideas.

Cheryl, do you mean artwork above the headboard of bed or are you recommending not placing any art above bed? How large of a painting would you suggest to fit that space and not appear too small or too large.

Hard to advise about art when we can't see the ceiling height in your photo.

I generally like a single sizeable piece over a headboard, but tall headboard + low ceiling can make that too tight, in which case two matched prints might be a better way to go.

I'm not sure because of how inaccurate colours are on our monitors, but it looks to me as though the colours of your rug do not work at all well with the colour of the wall, which is much more yellow. You might consider, if you would like to keep this rug, repainting the room either in the neutral colour on the rug or the most subdued blue in the rug. I think the blue could be wonderful, with the curtains in the lightest colour of the rug.

Also, although I would work with the colours of the rug I would not want to be confined by them. Colours that could really enrich the look of the room inclue several of the more subdued pinks, and gold. Green could also work -- sage, perhaps even mint. Think of using them in lamps, throw pillows, a throw blanket, art, a vase (not all of the above! just a two or three).

For bedding, I'd probably look for something in the neutral colour of the carpet, but preferably with quilting or other textural interest, and a bit lighter or a bit darker.

Art placement -- you know, sometimes we get obsessed with what should go over our beds. I love to have art in the room too that I can see when I am in bed. Right in front of me, or on a side wall.

Rina, the funny thing is the variation is appearance of the rug depending on the angle. If I look against the natural grain of rug, the middle part of rug appears more dark beige. If I look from the other end, the beige transforms to ivory. The walls are painted "Plantation Beige" color, so there is some similarity with the walls depending on the angle. I guess the beauty and drawback of these rugs.

I don't like anything over a bed ( I imagine it falling on me) with a sleigh bed you really don't need anything. I would prefer art or mirrors and lamps on the bedside tables and larger art above a dresser or on a blank wall. you only show the bed wall so don't know if you need either. I really suggest you look at Houzz pictures and save EVERTHING you like. you'll find commonality in color and design to pull from. I like the bedding and bench acm posted

Bed covering should be large enough to hang down on the sides and cover the exposed mattress and box spring. An ivory or off-white duvet or coverlet, (depending on the season if you need different levels of warmth) would work and should be easy to find. A throw and a couple of decorative pillows in a color you like to add some interest. Maybe gold to tie in the wall color and beige rug background? Definitely lamps. I like artwork over a bed, I think it makes the room look “finished”, but the size will depend on how much wall there is between the headboard and the ceiling.

As an alternative, you can put an art print above each nightstand. It’s ok if the lamps are in front of part of the art.

The space to access the left side looks a bit narrow. Can you move the whole thing to the right a few inches to give a little more room between the bed and tall chest?

The tall chest was purchased as part of the set as a special-order -- I have since regretted getting it, because the room starts to look a bit cluttered. I didn't realize how little space would be left with all this furniture. Since it was special order and special stain, returning was not an option. So we ended up sticking it between two windows. We also have a counter-height matching double chest of drawers under the hanging TV on the wall you cannot see - that fits in well. I wish we only had those - room would feel much more roomy. The bed is slightly offset from the center by a couple of inches. It leaves probably 3 feet of walking space, so leaves good amount of walking room. I get bothered by asymmetry, so any more offset will start to bug me. It doesn't look like much space from this angle, but it is decent amount.

Maybe you could sell the tall chest?

Heather, definitely looking for a traditional look. I like solid stained wood furniture, traditional bedroom decor, mostly neutral colors. For colors, we seem to like color blue, so blue accents/pieces are certainly pleasing. Thank you.

Do you all think lamps like this will work well with our room or is it too busy?

Thank you, that's what we were afraid of. It was on sale, but design too busy. We looked for solid navy blue lamps in the area and the closest we found was this. It seems to have a touch of greenness to it. I guess aqua-blue - not very dark. I am not sure if it will complement the rug or stand out too much. As someone suggested, it is not necessary to have the exact color match, as long as they complement each other.

I like them but really would look for bedding first. do a search on Houzz for blue master bedrooms photos it might help. I like to see what things look like. if you like it in someone else room you should like it in yours. follow your gut if you only put things into the room that you love, you will love the room. but there are cheaper choices to get you by if you can't find the perfect item. i get it to finish a room while still lookin. i say its perfect for now.

The rug is very nice, you just have to find solids or patterns that work with it. Agree you should find bedding first. Lamps could be cream, or metallic, or blue, or an accent color, but depends on bedding.

Here are my suggestions:

I think the orientation of the rug is correct but could be pulled forward about 8-12 inches.

I would honestly recommend painting the walls! I found the color Revere Pewter by Ben Moore to be a beautiful warm and cool neutral.

A round mirror above the tall dresser to raise the height in order to match the height of the windows. This helps the piece feel more like it belongs there. More info

Stick to white or off-white bedding in something full. Adding euro pillows will also help to add fullness to the bed. The way you dress a bed can really alter the way the room feels overall.

For drapery, choose a color that matches the wall color you end up with. It does not need to match exactly, but be in the same family whether its slightly lighter or darker.

Artwork is personal! If you can find pieces you love, then two side by side above the bed would work best. Definitely make sure you take measurements of the width of the head board so you do not exceed that width when hanging the pieces, and leave a few inches between the two.

Not sure a color can be warm and cool. Maybe there’s something in the middle?

Check out the color Revere Pewter! Depending on the space it can read both ways, so I guess you could say it is in the middle of warm and cool. :) I'm currently working on a remodel and the color is used on the entire first floor where it compliments both the warm wood flooring and the bright whites used through out.

Do you think a light colored lamp would be a better pick than a simple solid color navy blue lamp to coordinate with rug's blues and infuse some color to an otherwise brown and beige room? And regarding drapes, do you feel light-blue drapes would not be an option compared to beige ones? I am wondering if we will have too much beige/brown in the room and trying to dilute neutral colors with more vibrancy, while keeping the design traditional. But I guess we need to balance blues, since if the bedding, rug, and lamp have blues in them, maybe beiges are thus better for drapes? I will look into the new color for the walls, looks nice.

I'd say buy the bedding next because it will set the direction for lamps,drapes and other accessories. One thing to remember in bedrooms is just how much space the flat plane of a bed IS....basically it is another wall. So whether the bedding is a symphony of textured beiges or blues or a mixture of both,really matters. Wall colour comes last. Also,this space would be vastly improved by removing the tall chest.

Eugene, love your Nain rug it is beautiful. I think what detracts is the wall color and the bedding. If you keep the bedding without pattern but with texture the room will shine. I think painting your walls BM Revere Pewter is a great idea. I have that color in my bedroom and it looks awesome (color was applied by previous owners and fit with my bedding and furniture. Did not have to change anything.) Enclosed picture of my bedroom so you can see how this color goes nicely with dark furniture and blues.

As several here have already mentioned, there is a clash between the bedding and rug. I would look for a slightly smaller rug, as this rug is really taking over the entire space. For your new rug, decide if you want the rug or bedding to be the focal point. Pick one or the other, but not both.

I chose white lamps in that style because of all the dark wood. I think it's important to bring some white, or lighter color in that area because the floor and walls are so much lighter than the furniture. The lamps offer balance. If you chose drapery with blues you could do a lighter blue or navy, or something in a subtle pattern. (it wont clash with the rug) I would just stay away from a DARK navy.
