Please help with windows for new construction
Comments (6)Integrity by Marvin is a fine choice the others not so much. CR opinion in windows means nothing to me as they sell their rating I don't really care what anyone says about that. But Pella is crap (lawsuit not withstanding) and Jeldwen is no better. Your GC recommends Jeldwen because that is what his lumberyard or building supply sells unfortunately most GC's just don't know any better when it comes to windows....See MorePlease help picking Fibrex windows for new construction
Comments (17)Integrity here is more $$ than Anderson 100 but every one should get multiple bids on their own. Regional pricing and differences from one dealer to another can be substantial. If I would have taken the first bid on a recent project I could have easily paid 10k more for the same Marvin windows from a different dealer. AFAIK what Fibrex offers is more rigidity and less warping than straight vinyl or at least that's the sales line. Integrity is Fiberglass and was designed to directly compete with Renewal by Anderson. Marvin's glass warranty is a bit vague. There's no way any of us can know what the warranty is from their glass supplier although you can contact them to get the "further" details. Anderson's warranty is pretty darn clear at a flat 20 years. Any warranty that's explicit and concise is better from my perspective. They also detail their time frame for warranty work. Something Marvin does not do and I can tell you from personal experience it's slower than what Anderson warrants. Marvin; "GLASS COMPONENTS Glass warranties apply to factory-installed glass or Marvin-supplied glass installed by Marvin-authorized service personnel. Clear insulating glass with stainless steel spacers is warranted against seal failure caused by manufacturing defects and resulting in visible obstruction through the glass for twenty (20) years. Non-tempered glass is warranted against stress cracks caused by manufacturing defects for ten (10) years. All other glass and glass features are provided with the same warranties, limitations, and exclusions Marvin receives from its supplier; contact Marvin for further details" Anderson; "The glass in Andersen® 100 Series factory glazed window and door units (including dual-pane glass, Low-E glass, SmartSun™ glass, Heatlock™ glass, PassiveSun® glass, patterned glass (including obscure, fern, reed and cascade designs), Finelight™ grilles, and tempered versions of these glass options) is warranted to be free from defects in manufacturing, materials and workmanship for twenty (20) years from the date of purchase from the retailer/dealer. It is also warranted not to develop, under normal conditions, any material obstruction of vision resulting from manufacturing defects or as a result of premature failure of the glass or organic seal for twenty (20) years from the date of purchase from the retailer/dealer. Patterned glass (including obscure, fern, reed and cascade designs) is warranted not to develop, under normal conditions, any material change in appearance resulting from manufacturing defects or as a result of premature failure of the glass or organic seal for twenty (20) years from the date of purchase from the retailer/dealer. This limited warranty on glass does not apply to special order glazings, impact-resistant glass or glass that is not factory installed by Andersen."...See MoreCan't decide on windows for new construction. Comments (16)I agree wholeheartedly with the concept of not skimping on windows, however the specific recommendation of that builder may be a little misguided IMO. We replace Pella's in age range of 10 years +/- on a regular basis for one. Secondly, vinyl is not a bad choice based on performance or durability. In fact, a high end vinyl product would be an excellent choice in that regard as thermal and structural performance ratings would indicate, HOWEVER, that just may not fit the look that you are going for with all of the wood in the home. I'd suggest something with a stainable interior to keep the theme. The Marvin Integrity with wood interior would be a nice choice, in fact I think that would be a really good fit. It's one of the more durable products on the market with a real wood interior. The Provia Aeris would be worth consideration as well. Both windows are primarily constructed of fiberglass and vinyl respectively, with a wood veneer (actual wood 1/4 to 1/2", not contact paper) on the interior side. Both would typically be priced more reasonably than that Designer series and by a fair margin. Lastly, I believe that triple pane is well worth the cost in colder climates as well. Definitely worthy consideration if the product that you choose has it available....See MoreHelp! Need to pick windows for new construction in Upstate SC.
Comments (17)Hello Jbrig - Great question. The finish choice may be influenced by your location. Coastal applications usually require the 2605 finish but people throughout the U.S. may request the upgrade if they want to be assured of extended longevity of the finish. Seeing that you are in upstate South Carolina, but not knowing exactly where, the 2605 finish may be a wise choice. You may have already seen this, but for reference, I am providing a link to our clad colors brochure PDF, There is a table on the back page with additional information on coastal weathering and the differences between the two specifications: AAMA 2604 and 2605 Information In addition, here are a few more details about the paint system that I hope will help with your decision: Windsor factory applied heat-cured painted finishes are durable and very colorfast. The Super Durable Polyester TGIC and Fluoroset® resin-based paints block damaging ultraviolet rays of the sun and repel general air pollution. They will not whiten or pit when exposed to dew, fog, rain or acid rain and will retain their color and gloss level for many years, based respectively on meeting AAMA 2604 or 2605 specifications. However, to assure that they retain their original beauty, even these highly durable finishes should be cleaned occasionally. When selecting a cleaning solution, use mild soap solutions and avoid using strong acid or alkali cleaners as they may damage the finish. If I can be of further assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out....See Morerobin0919
