Please Help!!! New Construction and windows leaking
Comments (9)I would certainly insist on replacing the drywall and insulation that got wet. But before that's replaced, be sure to see how your windows were installed. You might consider contacting your window manufacturer to see if they have a rep in your area who can check them out. My concern isn't so much for the windows but for the installation job. We went through >6 mos. of major inconvenience and expense all because the builder of our spec house thought he knew better than the window makers and didn't bother installing sill pans or correctly flashing the windows. Even after the builder paid to remove/replace brick, re-caulk (multiple times), etc., he whined about the window manufacturers insisting on needless (in his opinion) and costly installation procedures. Sadly, we know that the way this house was built is no different than most other houses in our area, whether they sell for $300K or $3MM. I went up against two other builders who insisted they'd "always" built houses using shockingly slipshod methods and thought that I was just difficult and picky for wanting to conform to building code (inspections are a joke here, so there's no comfort to be gained from a house passing inspection.) It's easier and cheaper to correct the problem now than after you're living in the house. Good luck!...See MoreNew Construction Windows: Help Me Pick!
Comments (7)I somewhat think you need to narrow your search a bit as to what you want. SDLs are a pricey option and unless you really, really, want them...not worth the money in most cases. Contoured vs. flat grids are standard and in most cases do not cost a cent more than flat and at worst, are only a few bucks more. If you don't like the white interior, +1 to Eco's recommendation of looking at a laminate interior or other interior. If you really want the look of wood (the interior laminates on vinyl are going to look good but not quite wood) look at something like a Marvin Integrity with a wood interior or Inline Fiberglass with a real wood interior. What is the exterior cladding of the home going to be? There are some nice options with some of the manufacturers to have an integrated J-Channel or brickmold return for a seamless look. At the end of the day, they should be a one-time investment so spend the money wisely (i.e. get the performance and solid product for durability) and get the look that you will be happy with for the life of the windows....See MoreSoft-lite windows for new construction - help educate me please.
Comments (4)I did get confirmation that all models can be used in new construction with the proper nailing flange accessory like wow said. Any opinions on which model is the better value? I'm in SC and will have plantation shutters on the inside of almost all windows so the frames won't be very visible from the inside. I do want a good looking (as good as a vinyl window can be)exterior frame. These will be going on a traditional brick house - new construction. I'd greatly appreciate any advice....See MoreHelp! Comments (17)Hello Jbrig - Great question. The finish choice may be influenced by your location. Coastal applications usually require the 2605 finish but people throughout the U.S. may request the upgrade if they want to be assured of extended longevity of the finish. Seeing that you are in upstate South Carolina, but not knowing exactly where, the 2605 finish may be a wise choice. You may have already seen this, but for reference, I am providing a link to our clad colors brochure PDF, There is a table on the back page with additional information on coastal weathering and the differences between the two specifications: AAMA 2604 and 2605 Information In addition, here are a few more details about the paint system that I hope will help with your decision: Windsor factory applied heat-cured painted finishes are durable and very colorfast. The Super Durable Polyester TGIC and Fluoroset® resin-based paints block damaging ultraviolet rays of the sun and repel general air pollution. They will not whiten or pit when exposed to dew, fog, rain or acid rain and will retain their color and gloss level for many years, based respectively on meeting AAMA 2604 or 2605 specifications. However, to assure that they retain their original beauty, even these highly durable finishes should be cleaned occasionally. When selecting a cleaning solution, use mild soap solutions and avoid using strong acid or alkali cleaners as they may damage the finish. If I can be of further assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out....See MoreUser
