How to lighten up dark kitchen?
Comments (18)Thanks everyone for your replies and great ideas. You aren't supposed to put hot pots on granite either, less risky than quartz but can still damage it. I've had granite for 20 years and never had a problem putting hot pans on it. I don't cook with cast iron but everything goes straight onto the counter, from the cooktop and the oven. I have a small marble baking counter and don't feel safe putting a hot pot on that, but never think twice about granite. I'd install more kitchen lighting before giving up on soapstone, if that's what you have your heart set on. The kitchen will be well lit but I'm trying to avoid having to put lights on during the day. I'm really hoping that it will look brighter with the primed drywall. We'll see. Corian rain cloud is pretty popular, I think. This blog post has photos of her rain cloud slab and install. I love that Corian! I think it would look perfect in the bathrooms too. It would look great in the kitchen, but I really do like to put hot pans on the cooktop. Old habits die hard. I am tempted to find a work around though. It would look perfect! We put a solatube in our middle-of-the-house kitchen and it's been wonderful. Believe it or not, there is a path where through which we could install one or two but I was worried it would be like a spotlight. Do they spread the light well?...See MoreLighten up space
Comments (6)Changing to white trim and dorms is a big commitment and I'm not sure that will work with these dark walls. Here is your foyer with a more contrasting floor, however, everything would be brighter with a lighter paint on the walls. You have some big decisions to make about the future of your home. The dark trim definitely doesn't work with the beige floors. See images of foyers below. I think the problem is the color of your walls, unless you are prepared to break up the walls with large light graphics....See MoreDark kitchen. Comments (21)Are you remodeling because the kitchen is dark, or for some other reason? If only because of the lighting issue, there are many solutions to that, and some have been suggested already. I don't think borrowing light from the sunroom is going to be helpful. Pass thru openings aren't a good solution unless the room you're borrowing light from is super bright, and you'll lose storage; plus you have 2 doors that swing into that wall. They'll be awkward if hung to swing in the opposite directions. Painting the walls a lighter color with higher LRV will help, as will a new, brighter backsplash, and possibly a new lighter countertop.. No one has mentioned LEDs above the cabinets, but that can be helpful too. If you can't increase the window size, maybe you can add a skylight above the sink area. At the least, dropping a pendant closer to the work area should help. Painting the island to match the other cabinetry will increase brightness as well. Love the floors!...See MoreHow do I lighten up my Mom’s basement living room?
Comments (32)Condolences for your loss. Mother's Day is coming up. You might consider a digital picture display with a light colored frame with happy pictures loaded to add light and prompt happy memories.. https://www.google.com/search?q=electric+digital+photo+frame&client=firefox-b-1-d&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjd_b7llbnoAhXEmuAKHRT1DIgQsxh6BAgOECs&biw=1366&bih=654#spd=9152850867742305625 You might remove the too small rug altogether and add a small light/bright colored storage ottoman or even a coffee table where she can keep family photographs. Agree with the suggestion that you try swapping the loveseat and rocker locations. With the loveseat moved, you can dress the patio door/window. If that is a sliding door, a wood or metal rod in the bottom rail might make the room "feel" more secure -- no need to block it with a sofa. A lot of people don't care for vertical blinds but I consider them perfect for a patio door or even a large row of windows in an informal / contemporary room. White vinyl vertical blinds would provide more privacy and light control options than drapes. If your mom's window is on the north side of the building, she'll not be getting any sunlight directly into her room and that may be one reason why the room is "dark" . If any light comes in ... or even if it doesn't ... consider adding a brightly colored sun catcher or two that can be attached to the window via small plastic suction cup. https://www.google.com/search?q=tiffany+suncatchers&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwigr7T2k7noAhUvmuAKHahuBwcQ_AUoAnoECAsQBA&biw=1366&bih=628 There are fabric covers for sofas and love seats. Perhaps you could find a light colored one for at least one of her pieces. Alternately, a light colored afghan or throw might help. Instead of getting rid of the cabinet(s) in the corner(s), you could add a tall thin lamp with a large white shade there. If the big box store options are out of price range, check with Habitat for Humanity or Good Will or other local charity sponsored thrift stores for bargains....See More- 5 years ago
