Backsplash to lighten up a dark kitchen?
Comments (15)Thanks for all of the advice, everyone! I took some better pictures of the kitchen in terms of light (see below), although it has no flooring right now. The impetus for the slight remodel is a flood that started two floors above me and ruined all of my hardwood floors, so they're all pulled up and my condo is entirely concrete at the moment other than the kitchen and the bedrooms/bathrooms. That being said, based on your advice, I decided to suck it up and get new counters. I'm going with quartz with a carrara marble look, and I think I'm going to go with a white/frosted white glass tile pattern backsplash. Here's a picture of a cabinet and counter that are similar to mine with the backsplash I'm leaning toward. I'm not totally married to this one, though, so I'd love some input! I'm also including a picture of the flooring I'm leaning toward (although it's a tiny bit redder in person). Now I just need to choose a paint color! Thanks again, everyone, for convincing me that it's worth it to do new counters! Pictures of the kitchen now:...See MoreBacksplash to lighten up a kitchen with dark cabinets
Comments (2)Lighting will be your friend in this situation. A backsplash replacment is going to be a lot of work and require demolition with sheetrock repair before replacement. If the countertop already has cream in it, it's certainly not on the darkest end of the spectrum, and I would imagine your existing backsplash isn't totally dark like black. Without pictures, it's hard to help, but if you don't have under-cabinetry or task lighting, start there. Then consider some overhead track lighting or possibly halogen fixtures to brighten up the area before you address the backsplash issue....See Morehow do I LIGHTEN this kitchen up??? please!
Comments (7)Can you share your budget for changes? Your kitchen is very pretty, but I can see how insufficient lighting and dark cabinets could be frustrating. (I love the cabinets by the way.) I do think some brushed nickel hardware can add a bit of bright jewelry to your kitchen, but it won't make a big difference in the overall brightness of the space. In terms of lighting, I think megs1030's suggestion for under cabinet lighting is a great one. That would probably make a pretty substantial difference. Consider hiring an electrician to add recessed lighting in the ceiling. It kind of looks like there might already be one fixture near your ovens. You could consider painting the walls a lighter color. What you have now looks really nice with the finishes, but it's a mid-tone color so something light would bring some more brightness to the space. You could replace your countertops with something much brighter - closer to white. Obviously that would be a substantial cost to replace what are already lovely countertops just to bring more brightness to the space. Probably much more cost effective to just add lighting. One more suggestion that is a bit of a personal choice: you have a lot of items on your countertops. It's not messy or cluttered in any way, but there are a lot of items that could be tucked away potentially. I find my kitchen looks brighter when the countertops are almost completely clear. Put your knives in a drawer instead of a countertop block. Put whatever appliance that is over the dishwasher into the pantry. Put the oils into the pantry or in a cabinet. Obviously this changes the function of your kitchen so it may not be for you....See MoreHow do I lighten up my kitchen? Rug, window treatments, lightening?
