How to find cabinets that match our existing ones?
Comments (8)Is there only one photo posted? That's all I can see . . . I can't see the hardware on the bottom cabinets. We had base cabs with inset doors made: I know that the uppers had the butterfly hinges and simular pulls as yours. The bottom had the pulls, but I think we had interior hinges . . . we did so much work on that house I can't remember some of the details. Everyone raved over the work we did, though -- thought that the base cabs were original to the house. I notice that the upper cabs are not shut all the way: one thing I remember about ours is that there was SEVERAL layers of paint, and in order to get them to shut we had to strip and paint them: that made matching the lowers easy. Also, if you take the door to a glass and mirror store, they can help you match glass as well. If you have any housing/salvage stores, cruise by to see if they have any old cabs -- you may be able to salvage old glass or hinges that way (it's amazing what the new "green" salvage places have). Another word to the wise. If you pull up the floor, be aware that there may be asbestos tiles underneath the flooring. You can play the "don't ask and don't tell" scenario, or just assume that it is and place the replacement floor over that layer. We just laid the floor over the old. The next owner, we heard, did the first option....See MoreAny Design Help to help match new countertop with existing vanity?
Comments (2)It doesn't look off in the photos but it's hard to see color nuances when no one uses flash photography anymore. Do the speckles in the quartz match the vanity color so there's at least that tie-in? What would you have chosen instead? A quartz with taupe undertones so your counter, cabinet, and floor is all the same boring tone? If it really bothers you, I'd think about updating the flooring to the more modern vibe of the vanity. The speckled quartzes need a busier, patterned floor tile. A tile with a little white to reference the counter would make the counter choice seem purposeful....See MoreHow do I choose a flooring color that matches my existing furniture?
Comments (11)The Kid Room 1 looks like the furniture is limited in size duration once the child is past the age of 5 or so. Have you considered a King size bed for the master? If so, you might not be keeping the same furniture there long-term, either. Kid Room 2's headboard could be recovered in a teen-friendly fabric if you wanted for a color change. I think you should just pick a flooring color that is your favorite and deal with the furniture in the future. Rugs and other decor you might have around the house will mask the flooring color anyway to some degree. I'm not a fan of painting furniture. I had a large chest of drawers for decades that was painted and required repainting several times. The finish was never robust at all, and it had to be handled very carefully and still didn't look the greatest....See MoreSwitching to hard flooring -- matching existing flooring
Comments (17)The wood in the kitchen is Jatoba (Brazilian Cherry). It is an exotic hardwood that has TWO different colour schemes: orange/brown/fiery OR pink/purple/mud-brown (yes...purple...I kid you not). The FUN part of Jatoba (tongue firmly in cheek) is it STARTS OUT life looking like a tame looking 'walnut' brown. It will look NOTHING like the existing floor. And then the COLOUR fires up and BAM! You have colour galore. Jatoba is photosensitive which is a big word that means 'it gets darker/stronger in colour' Just when you thought all the excitement was OVER...your floor turns purple. Not the orange/red/fiery colour of your EXISTING floor...Nope...you 'lucked out' and got the purple option. Go ahead and google 'pink brazilian cherry floors'. You will find dozens of this type of colouring. Buyer beware. Your stunning wood floor *might not be so easy to match. If it were my house, I would remove the wood and the carpet and start again with a wood you want....not one that you inherited....See MoreBrooke Skousen
