Flooring Design Dilemma

How do I choose a flooring color that matches my existing furniture?

Hi! Our new home has carpet on the stairs and 2nd floor. We want to get rid of the carpet and put in new flooring (laminate or engineered wood....maybe vinyl?). We are having a hard time choosing the right color of flooring that will go with our existing furniture. The master bedroom furniture is dark brown and the kids' bedroom furniture are both reddish-brown. We don't want anything too dark. I hope someone on here has a brilliant answer to our dilemma. We would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

! st what is the flooring on the main floor and why if it is wood don’t you just do the same upstairs . IMO we need a bit more info and I certsinly would not be getting stressed about the flooring working with the furniture and BTW kid #1 room will need changing very soon and so who knows what that will be. IMO do the same floor everywhere and it will be just fine.

Is this a different home, or do you already have wood-look flooring under this furniture? You could go with a very light color for contrast. Otherwise, you'll have a hard time matching both of the furniture suites because they are so different. You'll have to pick one or the other.

Old skool, I am far from an expert on species and I freely admit that. That does appear to be a select grade on length, knots, ect. except for the wide color variation. What I am seeing in todays select grade material is alot more uniform in the graining and color. I would hesitate to buy that wood online sight unseen. I much prefer dealing with a local wood distributor when it comes to matters like that. Just my opinion so take it for what it is worth :) have a great day!

I did order about 80 bucks worth of T-moldings from slk230red's link. They only take checks or money orders -- red flag there-- but I will withhold judgement until I hear from them and see if they will deliver. When I first started my own business I couldn't take credit cards for a while until I built up revenues so I am willing to give the benefit of the doubt, up to a point. If it's a scam I will order some close-but-not-perfect-match T-mold from HD or elsewhere. My flooring guy says he can make it work either way. Thanks all for the guidance.

I would not try to match it is going to be very difficult. What I would do is hire a wood worker to match the cabinet's that you need matched. Woodworkers could be a bit more pricey but that's really the only way to match it. Hope this helps

Help! My flooring is a mix of red and white oak. How do I match that?

I see there have already been some pieces replaced in at least one area. Its possible, that someone patched those pieces in and used white oak. They appear to have taken the stain a lot darker than the rest of the floor. The rest of the floor looks to be red oak. I see at least 3 shorter boards that have been laced in as a replacement on the wall side. I would use red oak, for the rest of the floors, and since they will all need to be refinished to match, have them remove those 3 boards and put in matching oak there too, so you dont have those strips of very dark wood.

I am using a visualization tool to help us decide. I really want to avoid reddish floors.

Paint the existing furniture? It would be a lot easier to paint those then try and pick out a flooring too match the diff colors. Do the kids a grey color and yours all white :) then just do whatever wood color floor you love !

We have been discussing this option as well. Painting furniture seems like a monumental task though.

The Kid Room 1 looks like the furniture is limited in size duration once the child is past the age of 5 or so. Have you considered a King size bed for the master? If so, you might not be keeping the same furniture there long-term, either. Kid Room 2's headboard could be recovered in a teen-friendly fabric if you wanted for a color change. I think you should just pick a flooring color that is your favorite and deal with the furniture in the future. Rugs and other decor you might have around the house will mask the flooring color anyway to some degree. I'm not a fan of painting furniture. I had a large chest of drawers for decades that was painted and required repainting several times. The finish was never robust at all, and it had to be handled very carefully and still didn't look the greatest.

Before we paint furniture let's look at what is an option in the flooring world. The colour of the furniture is going to be easy to work with. Most NATURAL wood products (ie. nothing gray, white, or black) will have the warm tones found in the furniture. And the homeowner wants to keep the floor light(er). Again this is super easy to do.

A 'red oak' looking laminate (or vinyl or engineered hardwood) will work nicely with the furniture. It has the cinnamon tones in the mineral lines as well as a very light airy look when left natural.

Excellent. So much easier than painting furniture.

Agree with SJ. Natural red oak, if you have to - white oak should work. Stay away from the bleached or stained versions.

I agree on the concept that you should choose a color you like..not try to match the furniture ..furniture isnt forever...the floors are...
