Matching a wood floor to existing cabinets and detailing
Comments (2)Are you planning to keep the same brick on the fireplace or going over it with stone veneers? I would say that if you are going to be replacing the cabinets at some point, don't even consider the color they are now, consider what they will look like when they are finished. I moved into a home 3 years ago and had a hard time getting my new wood floors to coordinate with the cabinets. I ended up going with BR-111 exotic Brazillian Walnut because it has many different tones in the wood and a lot of character. Worked out perfectly. We are now moving into a new home. Will be replacing the cabinets but have to try to coordinate all the wood trim with our new cabinets & wood flooring. I will again be going with a wood flooring that has different shades and more character as to pull all my other colors together. I love your wood ceiling and would definitely incorporate some of that color into the floor. That's just my opinion and I'm no decorater :) Kelly...See MoreRetrofit existing cabinets or buy new ones...HELP!!!!
Comments (22)Texasgal47....Great suggestions. Thanks for the website to the company. I can't wait to get that done. I'll need to save up a few pennies as my budget is maxed out right now. My KD at home depot isn't very experienced and is wondering how to design the cabinet for my subzero fridge. I have 45.5 inches of space available and the fridge only requires a 35.5 inch opening. She said she had to call someone to figure out what to do with the remaining 10 inches. I am a little nervous about this. Does anyone have any ideas?...See MoreHow to Pick Flooring & Countertops to Match Existing Cabinets
Comments (11)It looks like you have knotty alder for cabinets. These are natural coloured (light gold in tone) wood cabinets. That means you want to work with things that work with natural wood tones. The other thing you need to worry about is how BUSY the wood is. That means you want to work with counters/floors that are CALM (ie. not a lot of movement; not a lot of UMPH in the visual). Only ONE THING in the kitchen should have that "kick in the gut" impact (visually). The high-impact item you already HAVE = cabinets. Good. Now that has been established we can MOVE ON to the next thing: colours. Light gold wood likes to work with 3-4 "colours". The #1 = White (white counter tops...just like you have there...you would be replacing "like for like"). With a white counter you would look at white or very light flooring (just as you have already = another like for like replacement = not much of change for all that money spent). The #2 = Black. A black counter top (like Uba Tuba = black with hints of green in it) can be used to really set off the light tones in the wood. The easy-peasy floor choice would be (you guessed it) black. Ouch. This can be stunning - but VERY hard to live with. I do NOT think this is an option for you. The #3/#4 options would be BLUE or green (personal choice for colours makes blue more viable than green and vice verse). I personally LOVE blue with light gold wood. I love a blue slate (counter tops AND flooring) with a country-style wood kitchen. This is a great way to get a modern country feel (sigh...yes your kitchen is country in style...there is no way to change that without changing the cabinets). The BEAUTY in using blue slate is it works NICELY with gray. Gray and blue are often compatible (assuming the gray you choose has blue undertones). If you work with green, you will need to rethink the carpet and the paint. See how much fun this is? This is why Sophie suggests a designer. Personally I would go with blue slate. It has LOW visual impact. It is simple and timeless and it will EASILY support a modern country kitchen....it also works very very well with gray (again, watch your undertones in the paint/carpet...do NOT work with beigy tones...it will get ugly in a hurry)....See MoreNeed advice on new kitchen cabinets to match our house
Comments (21)So much fabulous feedback - THANK YOU!! @jhmarie - I think you are right about the white oak floors - they are very hard and don't really scratch. I'm going to consider quartersawn oak now... and you are definitely correct about a drab grey/brown combo. We are leaning towards the greige colors for the floors and backsplash. A cold hard grey won't really fit in with the rest of the house. @olmama - your kitchen looks fabulous and it really does remind me of ours. The ceilings are almost identical. @nosoccermom - I like the colors, but the shape is too modern. I think something between rustic and farm fits us better. I went to the website and saw those cabinets are oak... wow I had no idea oak could looks that good. lol. :) @Olychick - yeah I'm starting to have second thoughts about the knotty alder. with so many knots already, it might be too much "clutter" for such a small space. Out kitchen is not really that big - it just feels like it because of the open ceiling and the sun room with the windows makes it feel huge. @herbflavor - Thanks for the input on the flooring - I'm to the tile store this weekend to look at tiles like the ones mentioned above. @OneRidgeOff - Holy smokes!! I love your granite and backsplash. My partner also loves blues like that. He is going to flip when he sees your kitchen pictures. I'm so excited to pick our granite. :) @SJ McCarthy - you are 100% correct that we are going to struggle until we update the windows. the rest of the house was updated since building, but they did not update the sunroom, probably because of the cost. Those windows are HUGE. @Filipe Agostinho - I see what you are saying about contract - I'm going to focus on making sure there is contrast between the floors/backsplash/countertop and cabinets. This is a huge help. Ok, so to recap - definitely going to focus on greige floors, and will look at quartersawn oak, since it will match the trim in the rest of the house, and modern shaped cabinets will still update it, without having to update the rest of the house. You all are awesome. Thank you so much. :)...See Morerjr220
