Updating 90's kitchen in our new home
Comments (15)Thank you for all of your comments and compliments... You have reminded me not to rush into changing things. The house has alot of trim work throughout, including on the dining room ceiling, dining room walls, living room, windows, entry/foyer, doorways, etc...In those areas, all the trim has been painted white, but it appears to be the same style and type as what's in the kitchen/family room. I guess I was thinking that the rest of the trim work should be white too. But, I see now that it doesn't have to match and will leave a bit of character to the family room! The wood for the built-ins do appear to be an upgrade over the kitchen cabinets. As much as I love the look of all white trim, the family room has such a warm feeling, as is, so I will probably just keep any furniture in the room light for contrast and accent with color. I will definitely not rush to change to quickly! Some of our main reasons for choosing the new home is because it was custom built, is loaded with trim work and moldings and is in an older neighborhood with lots of large trees and yards. Of course, there is also plenty of shiny brass in all of the bathrooms, door handles and foyer lighting that we will be busy replacing. And, the landscaping needs some updating from the overly manicured large bushes surrounding the front entryway of the home. I may have trouble with interior design/decor, but I am in my element with landscaping and yard work! I appreciate all the comments about the kitchen...My husband and I have done a lot of work ourselves in our current home. He does most of our home repairs too; he hates hiring out! Life has gotten extremely hectic these days, so we have less time for DIY work like the time it would take to do paint the cabinets. But, I think we can easily handle the backsplash and modifying the cabinets with beadboard on the sides, but will find someone for counters/sink and help with whatever we do to the cabinets. It sounds like if we have to hire someone to paint the cabinets, it might put us way over our current budget. While I still love my inspiration kitchen photo, I may entertain the idea of darkening the stain/refacing the existing cabinets, possibly painting the center island as one of you mentioned and updating the counters, sink and adding backsplash and other details. This would buy us time (and save us money), until we can afford to get the wood floors we want and the painting of the cabinets the way GreenDay detailed. I appreciate all the advice....See MoreOur Newlywed new house kitchen needs some extra love and care!
Comments (5)are you thinking of expanding to get more room? does that large table need to stay? can you move the fridge? what's on the other side? the kitchen has no working space. none. if you want to rework the space, post more pics or a floorpan. if you want to keep everything the same, you can buy a sink base and few upper cabinets on the cheap, paint them and redo the back wall. easy. you could look on craigslist (if you're near a big city) and see what perfectly good kitchens people are ripping out so that they can remodel. I've seen entire kitchens, (cabs, granite, sink, and appliances) sell for 1K, total. lighting. is this a one story w/access to the attic above the kitchen? if so, look into some recessed lights. so, tell us what you want, what you need, and how much you can spend....See MoreAdvice on appliances for our new home
Comments (29)Went oven shopping over the weekend! Looked at Ganggue, Thermador, Bosch, GE Monogram, Wolfe again Eliminated Ganggue because it was not intuitive to use and SUPER expensive for a second home. Thermador - had no opinion one way or another (tired to research that now!) Bosch 500,800, Benchmark were VERY affordable comparatively - even without the $1000 promotion from Wolfe you come away with about $2k savings. The tubular subzero handles and the Bosch handles do not match at all and they will be side by side so...... saw the GE Monogram whose handles match the subzero refrigerator handles. Of Course I revisited Wolfe E series ovens and liked them again!! Arrgh!!! Found out about the 6 year warranty from Subzero/Wolf - It comes with a standard 2 year and then you can get a 3 year more from Subzero and then if you get it installed by a certified installer then you get one more year - but then you can't get a $1000 off for the package promotion. So here are my options: 1. Bosch - for the price and good reviews on Houzz as far as their chipping - only one complained and they got the replacement right away. Just have to read up and decide on the 500,800, Benchmark. 2. Wolfe E with 6 year warranty 3. GE Monogram - although not good for gourmet cooks (which I'm not so it's ok). This option is in contention only because the handle match the Subzero refrigerator right next to it!! Or just get Bosch and maybe panel the subzero refrigerator so you can get whatever handle you want - Wasn't thinking of paneling until now because we like the stainless steel look. It breaks up the kitchen some. Will 42" French door Subzero refrigerator right next to a Bosch double oven look really bad? (appliance guy thinks I won't be happy with the mismatch!)...See MoreNEED HELP decorating our new home!!
Comments (11)My Husband and I went back and forth on what to do with our mismatched home. Either change the grey paint throughout the house or change the warm colors in the kitchen. Although it's the more expensive choice, we opted to go with the latter since our furniture is modern and grey. So without spending an arm and a leg we are wondering what is the mininum we can do to make the kitchen more modern. The cabinetry is in really good condition so we are going to paint them white. We also purchased polished nickel cabinet hardware pulls and a polished nickel chandelier and pendants. We are thinking to change the backsplash matte white subway tile with grey grout to try to match the countertops. The countertops are very busy and have a ton of warm colors running through them, but they also have a nice amount of grey, black, and white. We're hoping the lighting and hardware will pull out the greys and whites and minimize the golds and browns. We are also debating onnif we should keep the built in custom appliances or get new appliances. The current appliances work and are in hood condition but are a bit dated since they've been there since about 2009. The big range hood also looks a bit dated with the little decorative ornament on the front. Any suggestions or ideas would be great!...See Moredebhurn
