The first thing is to relocate the TV. You have all this wall space yet you put it on top of the fireplace where it's too high for proper viewing and it's making your ceilings look low.

Move it to the wall with the floor lamp, reorientate the furniture. Add some curtains to soften the windows, get a nice rug to ground the furniture, and then find some artwork you love for the walls.

I agree that your furniture arrangement needs work.

I would not put shelves and doo dads and family photos on the walls. Concentrate on finding a few large pieces of art. That will make your walls look finished and fresh, not cluttered.

Make a feature wall to liven up the room. I'll soon be using a faux leather on one wall in my family room. It comes in many patterns.

In response to Joanne, accent walls only work if there is some interesting feature or design element already there worth highlighting. A plain wall does not fit the bill.

Also, plan for lighting near your seating rather than against the walls. I agree with three of comments above.

Please take Beverly's advice. The wall with the six artworks is the wall you see from the dining area and kitchen...there should be something interesting to look at there!

Also you need lighting near your seating, not stuck in the corner! Notice again where Beverly has placed your lamp. Add also some tables so you have a place to put down a drink, a cup, or a book.

Sina - we thought about doing the TV there... but doing so would mean we’d have the back of the couch facing the kitchen and if my daughter is playing i wouldn’t have any sight lines to see her! With the angle and sink-in nature of our couch we haven’t felt it’s too high.. although i do understand your point about it making the ceiling look low!

Beverly - i love the way this looks. The peach pillows are likely going back upstairs to a guest room - we just have them down until i find something that I like (I’ve been having a hard tome finding the right shade of green/blue to compliment the walls without being too warm or cold). The reason we have the console table behind the couch is for drinks, books, etc. I should have mentioned we have a baby who is just starting to walk so wanted a piece to help keep things out of reach but still provide functionality. I do love the way it looks it the corner - I’ll have to measure and see if it’ll fit... it’s quite long. I love the gallery art; my first idea was to do black and white family photos in a grid about that size (all same size and color frames). Do you think this would look as good as the colorful artwork there? Where would i move the storage ottoman in this arrangement?

Kristen, You can certainly place the rectangular ottoman in front of the sectional.

IMO having to reach behind for a drink is pretty awkward & the console just appears to be too small for behind the sectional.

You can always add a few round accent tables or 'C' tables for drinks. I know this is difficult with a toddler, but

I always like a fairly neutral envelope with colorful art and or accessories. Because that wall is large I added the 9 piece set but it can be other items.

This type of bookcase could be mounted on either side of the doorway. They are available in colors.

The bookcases are modular so the bookcases and be turned and combined.

Here are some ideas for you empty walls. You could have a console table with art over it, a desk on one of the back walls, or book shelves if you need storage.

I'm sorry, but I'm so sick of hearing about "sight lines" to watch the kids playing! This is a terrible trend that has led to the insecurity of kids who now feel they have to have "safe places" even after they leave home. Or it leads to kids like the 30-year old recently who had to go to court and be forced out of his parent's home. I guess kids can't have bicycles now, or they might get out of sight on them. We're raising a generation of "Learned Helpless" people. Sorry for the rant!! Lovely home.

Deco - I’m not apologizing for wanting to be able to see my small child who is just learning to walk in a home with cats and dogs, a fireplace and furniture with sharp edges. When she’s old enough to be steadier on her feet, we’ll revisit moving the furniture. Maybe we’ll even buy her a bike.
