Our crown is 6 5/16", one piece, using it over the whole house (in the dining room we've got a different crown below the tray). We had our cabinet guy match this crown to the kitchen cabs. When I was starting our DIY kitchen remodel, I decided to get a compound miter saw. After researching it I got a Hitachi 10" sliding compound miter saw. One thing I learned is that some people feel that for doing detailed work, a 10" is better than a 12", since the 12" blade can wobbly slightly. One thing that definitely makes CMS's more suited to the task is since they are more portable, you can set them up right near where the task is, rather walking down to the shop and back upstairs for each successive cut. Also I am prejudiced against radial arm saws since my high school shop teacher would frequently and loudly state: "Radial Arm Saws are only good for one thing: sawing off your own arm, that's why they call them radial arm saws."

I suppose it could work, but I think most people try to make the fascia diappear into either the cabinetry or the ceiling. If they want it to extend the ceiling line they paint it ceiling color and the heavier crown is usually separating the cabinets from the fascia. If they want to extend the eye up, the cabinet color goes up to the ceiling. In what you are describing it sounds like you are trying to make the fascia of visual interest, not to disappear. I think it would be difficult to pull off well and in addition to ceiling color, I think it also depends on widths of the individual components. here is a picture that emphasis the fascia with molding but I think it works in part because of its monochromatic nature.
