Can I see your crown molding?

If you have crown molding, I would love to see it. Especially if you have 9 foot floors! Also, why did you choose what you chose? Anyone have 3-piece molding? We are considering that for a few rooms. How many inches is your molding? Thanks!

I have 8ft. ceilings. I am thinking you meant 9ft ceilings, not floors as well.
So here is mine. It was 4 in. crown. We chose this because we have extensive moulding. Did not think we needed more at the crown. We also, as you can see have the paneling so it was plenty. I do love the heavier crown and especially the look of the 3 piece but did not need it for what we were doing.

You can attack it from a couple of different angles... If the crown is all the same, then you can consider it all "room crown", and you can then paint it all creamy white. I have seen instances where the crown is all the same and the color simply transitions to blue at the soffit-to-cabinet crown miters. Your choice. I prefer to make the two crowns different though, making the cabinet crown smaller than the room crown. With the cabinet crown minor to the more major room crown, cope the cabinet crown to butt into the room crown. Paint the room crown white and the cabinet crown blue. Much depends on the size and styles of the crowns, etc, how they meet up, how they relate, etc. But it really boils down to your personal preference. The good news? It's only paint. Easy to change if you decide to change your mind.

Go ahead and nail some it up and look at it in place. If it looks good to you after a week then do a permanent installation. If not then take it down and sell it. If you can, include an outside corner in your test because crown is most noticeable at outside corners. As far as scale, crown that size should be matched with 71/2" base and 4" case in round numbers. The window trim will look better if it includes stool and apron. But, that's not a worry until you see if you like it on your ceiling. Jan

I could have written your post as this is exactly the question we have been asking ourselves! We also have 8' ceilings and will be getting Kraftmaid 36'' cabinets in a simple shaker style (Lyndale - same as yours but in cherry). We haven't ordered yet, but we're thinking of raising the cabinets by an inch or so to decrease the space above slightly and add an inch or so of light rail under the cabinets, so that the distance from the countertop to the light rail is 18''. That would leave us with about 5'' above the cabinets. We think we'll get the large cove molding and have about 2 1/2'' of plain filler in between. I believe there's something called large starter molding that looks like filler but has a horizontal piece attached at the bottom to form an L-shape. I'm thinkin g that this would enable us to have the filler piece come forward a little from the cabinet front. Does that make sense? Please keep us posted in case you find a better solution! HTH!

ffjunk, of course it's a personal choice, but thought I should add, we have a situation similar to yours, with a pass-through window between painted cabinets, as well as a pocket door between a cabinet and a cabinet pantry. Our cabinet crown molding, and our whole house crown molding are the same heights, but different cuts, so the choice was easier for us - keep the same crown molding throughout the kitchen, though it is open concept. We are using stop blocks at the pocket door crown as the pantry is a stained along with the crown molding above it, and the cabinet adjacent is painted, along with the crown above that. The trim around the door will be painted the same as the cabinet/cabinet crown molding. Our ceilings are 9'. We are also using a stop block where the whole house crown meets the kitchen cabinetry crown - it would be very difficult to both cope and scribe the crowns to match and we prefer the stop blocks. I don't have photos as we are still in the midst of remodeling and our cabinet maker has yet to bring and install the stop blocks.

kelleg: not sure if you've already had to make this decision, but just in case...our's finally is up and remembered this post.

Our crown is 6 5/16", one piece, using it over the whole house (in the dining room we've got a different crown below the tray). We had our cabinet guy match this crown to the kitchen cabs. Obviously nothing is painted yet!

The floors are gorgeous! In my area it is so rare to find the reclaimed wider heart of pine planks.

Mairin, thank you. Yours looks very nice. Are your ceilings 9 feet? We ended up going with about the same size. Brutuses, thanks for sharing yours. Is it two diff sizes? They both look great.
