I'm with funcolors...ceiling white is an abomination! In most rooms, an untinted white ceiling sits there over your head like a piece of posterboard, and makes you feel as though you were in a shoebox with the lid on. In our previous house, I used a nice warm gray in our library, which had substantial crown and cabinetry in cream, and I painted the ceiling a very pale peachy pink. Not noticeable unless you looked at it, but it warmed the whole business up considerably. And I used eggshell finish, because I wanted a very subtle sheen in that room. Whenever the ceiling surface is in very good condition, I prefer eggshell...but it will make textures and flaws more noticeable. Rooms with high ceilings and no crown look wonderful with the ceilings painted the same color as the walls (the height of the ceiling mitigates the flop angle). Pale pale blue can look lovely with camel colors. Green, I think, is always a little weird, because the sky is almost never green (unless you're about to take an unscheduled trip to Oz...). With green walls, a very subtle pale gold tint is nice. And if a white ceiling is desired, matching the trim color is the way to go. I usually choose cream ceilings with red or terracotta walls, because red is very reflective and will tint the ceiling with reflected light, and the yellow in the cream keeps it nice and warm.

Cove molding is a variety of crown molding with a concave profile. I don't find that it makes the ceiling look higher; some experts say that by drawing attention to the ceiling, the ceiling may in fact look lower. To counteract that, paint the ceiling a lighter colour than the walls. Crown molding does make for a smoother transition and is characteristically used in more expensive traditional homes. Or in homes that are aspiring to a traditional look. I can't find the exact picture I am looking for. I don't care for the idea of not using crown on that wall. It will looked unfinished IMO. I would trim those two windows in a flat stock like the attached photo in a bungalow/craftsman style and make the top flat pediment large enough to go up high enough that the crown will run around it. So the two are incorporated together. This is the type casing I am referring to. ffjunk, of course it's a personal choice, but thought I should add, we have a situation similar to yours, with a pass-through window between painted cabinets, as well as a pocket door between a cabinet and a cabinet pantry. Our cabinet crown molding, and our whole house crown molding are the same heights, but different cuts, so the choice was easier for us - keep the same crown molding throughout the kitchen, though it is open concept. We are using stop blocks at the pocket door crown as the pantry is a stained along with the crown molding above it, and the cabinet adjacent is painted, along with the crown above that. The trim around the door will be painted the same as the cabinet/cabinet crown molding. Our ceilings are 9'. We are also using a stop block where the whole house crown meets the kitchen cabinetry crown - it would be very difficult to both cope and scribe the crowns to match and we prefer the stop blocks. I don't have photos as we are still in the midst of remodeling and our cabinet maker has yet to bring and install the stop blocks.
