Your Favorite Pink David Austin Roses
Comments (53)I plan to put Wildeve next to a fence - so if it does get long canes I will have something to attach it to. Jay [that's my son's name too!], glad to hear you like this rose - got it at an excellent discount for $5 in a big pot - it now has lots of buds. I have quite a few pink Austins - many are young so I haven't been able to evaluate yet. Am thinking I need to get Queen of Sweden, heard lots of good reports on it. England's Rose started out great last year, covered in blooms. Maybe I should have pinched them - the bush is still alive but not very vigorous - not going to let it bloom until/unless it recovers and starts growing. Love my James Galway - strong, upright bush that has a beautiful spring display then always has some blooms on it. Just got Sharifa Asma - covered in buds. I have a very old Mary Rose that does well. Love Tess of the d'Ubervilles - its on a huge fan trellis that it covers - it now has loads of big buds. Like Lady of Megginch - think I need to fertilize it more - when it blooms, you can see them all over the yard. Also have a large Scepter d'Isle that I like a lot - soft pink blooms, healthy bush, reliable rebloom. Charles Rennie Macintosh is another favorite - almost a lilac pink. I would like to see a stronger bush, but maybe its time for it to "leap" - it will be 3 yrs. old this year. That Alnwick rose is beautiful, Sylvia! Comments (67)I grew dozens at one point, but the only one worth of hoot is still crocus rose. I still get a small smattering of bloom on mary rose, abe darby and heritage. gone are a long list of middle aged ones, jude, sceptered ise, sharifa asma, Geoff Hamilton ect ect.. tried a lot of that time frame, most just couldn't hack it, as I tried growing on own roots, a pretty big no no here in the northeast if trying to grow marginal roses. OF ALL the austins I have grown (which included many fragrant ones people have already listed) Abe was always my favorite, Abe is a very unique fruit blend, some compare it to a wine and rose smell, I said it always smelled like grapefruit and roses to my nose. It doesn't quite compare to the best of the antiques to me, but if I had to pick one rose that was a modern to grow for fragrance it would still be Abe.. Below is crocus rose about 50% winter dieback here.. so not 100% sure in z4 it would be terrific honestly, I like crocus smell, its a mild tea scent actually. But if you cannot smell that, then it would do you any good. Some people cant....See MoreScepter'd Isle, St. Cecilia, The Lady Gardener-
Comments (41)Lilyfinch, neither of my Spirit of Freedom plants want to climb. The 6 yr. old is own root, a little more than 4' tall, and vase shaped. The 1 yr. old, is grafted, and much bushier than the older one. I've seen pictures of SofF climbing, so it may in your climate, especially if it's trained onto a structure. It is always healthy, maybe because it's so dry here. I know you will love it regardless of the form it takes....See MoreDavid Austin's Eglantyne- Who Grows It?
Comments (22)Pat, thank you for the thorough explanation of your weather conditions. We can freeze as early as Thanksgiving but usually its around xmas. Then we might have many or no freezes depending on the year lol. This year we had a couple light frosts and that's it! The nights do bounce around in the upper 30's- upper 40's F and days 60-85F ish during the winter. Feb is usually the coldest month. Our last freeze is usually around 1st of March or so. That's normally when I pull all my tropicals out of the greenhouse. Our winters are normally dry and summer it starts raining and it all goes to h*** and its Gumbo Soup outside (as they say in Louisiana) lol You are probably right about Eglantyne giving more blooms here in the winter. Crown Princess is the same way and gives a nice spring flush. I really think she likes cooler weather than I have here. At least she isnt a bs magnet. Diane, your Eglantynes are so ♡Lovely! Her fragrance must be delicious if you have five of her! She must also be extra tasty to deer. I recently saw deer here at night in the front yard near the house. None of the roses were touched, amazingly! I think they were after all the new green grass sprouting. Still. its making me nervous. I havent seen deer in our front yard ever and only a few at the back of the property when we first moved in and the place had been empty awhile. Hey Diane, Guess What? I just ordered Colette :) but as an own root plant. That place on etsy has her (freshgardenliving). I ordered from them last year and the rose was small but doing well still. I'm so happy, maybe my Colette will be as pretty as yours in about 5 years lol. ~Sjn...See Morejim1961 / Central Pennsylvania / Zone 6
