My jute rug slowly disintegrated, with the fibers falling through the backing.

Perhaps try a seagrass rug. They are very durable and stain repelling, but can be rough on tender knees.

Maybe get a poly rug or an indoor/outdoor rug in a neutral pattern.

I have wool rugs, and they hold up very well to kids and pets. If you get any kind of pattern, even if it’s light in color, they hide stains. If you don’t mind spending the money for handwoven wool, they are really pricey though, you can keep them forever because they can be cleaned. Otherwise tufted wool works well too. I have a couple tufted rugs that are 10 years old and still have life left.

I personally bought a secondhand handwoven wool rug from a very wealthy woman who had had no pets. The rug was in perfect condition...it’s probably at least $2k rug, and i bought it for $150. I had it professionally cleaned when I first bought it, and since then have cleaned it myself every spring with my bissell carpet cleaner. I pick a warm day, powerwash an area of the driveway so it’s clean, and I clean it and then let it dry completely in the sun before bringing it inside. I do the same to my tufted rugs.

If you want a trendier rug, that won’t last as long but will be much less expensive, you could just do that as well. There are plenty of options on overstock. An indoor/outdoor rug may work too, but they’re not very soft.

i have a pricey pale oriental that my cat decorated quite frequently in the last 6 months of her life, and honestly not a single accident couldnt be eradicated with a sponge and wool rug cleaner. amazing.

Nice colour on the walls! How about a herringbone design on the rug? And maybe to soften/go with walls have it in constrasting off-white and either grey or blue/grey (we have rugh with a bit of off white in our snug/den with kids and dog and it's fine!). Try Safavieh rugs? (google them - may also be available on Houzz?) Many they make are wool and they are durable! I bought a huge one 12 years ago. It's followed us to 3 houses in two countries and lived through our children and 3 different dogs, and it's still doing great. I spot clean it and occasionally have it steam cleaned and all is well. One of the best investments I've ever made (and it really wasn't that costly).

Just an observation - I have 3 kids and a dog and mostly hard surface floors so we have lots of area rugs. I find that my wool area rugs seem to attract dog hair while my synthetic ones do not seem to be as “sticky” for lack of a better term to the dog hair. I need to use my Miele vacuum on my wool rugs to get the dog hair off, but the synthetics can take either the rechargeable stick vac or even my iRobot roomba.

Thanks Heather! My jute rug was by Safavieh and I was bummed to get rid of it. I’ll check to see if I can find a herringbone design by them. My wall color is Collingwood by Benjamin Moore. I just had my walls painted and I love the way they came out! Thank you!
