rebounder or less expensive trampoline?
Comments (1)I have an Urban Rebounder and I like it alot. The $20 ones are not very comfortable nor safe. If there is any way to test out the better rebounders I would do that. You will tell the difference. Even between the different higher end brands there is a difference in the bounce. By the way you can usually get a really good deal from HSN for the Urban Rebounder....See MoreCan a pay raise result in less pay??? (taxes)
Comments (12)Sparksals, had the right amount of tax been withheld from your 8k earnings? If they taxed you as though that was all your earnings, almost nothing would be withheld. (federal tax bite up to 15,650 is 0). But since you file jointly, all your dollars came on top of DH's, and therefore all are subject to the tax rate HIS income topped out at. (within the couple, he already benefited from lower rates on his initial dollars earned) That then is 15% of every dollar over 15,000 or 25% of every dollar over 64,000. So if little or nothing was withheld, that 2000 sounds like a 25% hit on your 8k. Think that is maybe what happened? The Alternative Minimum tax was implemented in 1969 to keep high income people from avoiding taxes by claiming huge deductions. Deduct too much relative to your earnings and the IRS says "Nope" and hits you with the AMT. Problem is, this was all laid out with income and deduction numbers that have not adjusted for inflation. Salaries have risen, as have deductions (higher mortgages, home equity loans, etc), and a threshold of 40,000 is not the upper income threshold it was in 1969. ATM used to kick in for less than 1% of filers. Current estimates are it will affect 20% of filers by 2010. Here is a link that might be useful: IRS ATM info...See MoreLess expensive chinoiserie wallpaper?
Comments (10)I have an all over chinoiserie wallpaper similar in my dining room and it is from the early 80's. I don't know who made it, it is a fabric backed solid vinyl with a slight woven texture. It still looks new. It was very expensive at the time. I think it is just a timeless look. Anyway I am sure a good shop will have something similar- not everyone can pay that much for wallpaper. And no one gets that close to mine to mine to check it out!...See MoreTax Bill: Small Investors [may] Face Steeper Tax Bill
Comments (7)In Canada, when we sell, we use the average price. I bought shares in a dependable bank (only half a dozen biggies and more highly regulated in Canada) 50 years ago for about $4.25 per share, paying about 10 - 12 cents annual dividend, at lower tax rate than one pays on interest income, which is taxed at top rate, could have sold in 2007 for $107. , paying $3.08 annual dividend ... and when they were heavily involved in the financial fiasco in a nearby country in 2008, share price went down to $40. or so. People said, "Oh, my God! What a loss - I hope you sold earlier!". When the loss is small, one chooses to let the fluctuation ride, and when it goes down further, one doesn't want to take that loss. I asked them whether they felt that a Canadian bank might go broke, this week or next? A number of experts said later that that bank darn near did go broke - gov't. bailout? Others said that they would almost surely cut the dividend, heavily. They didn't - it stayed the same for about 4 years. I hoped that one day it would pay me each year the price I'd paid for the stock in the first place - granted - about 40 years before ... when a dollar was worth a lot more. The stock has recovered to about $124. dollars recently, $111. now ... paying $5.60 dividend, $1.35 above the original stock price, at low tax rate. How much have I paid a money manager to take good care of it through those 50 years? Not one penny. If you'd like mutual funds, about 90% of whose managers don't produce better than the segment of the markets in which they operate, that's your choice ... but spend some time learning how money and investments work, maybe starting in the library. If you're in Canada, check "Canadian MoneySaver" magazine, which doesn't carry ads: maybe attend one of the 40 or so groups of subscribers that meet to discuss investments - I've been involved monthly for about 20 years. After you've gained some experience, maybe done paper trading for a while, put some of your investable assets into quality stocks ... and pay yourself the 1.5 - 2.5% or so of their price that you pay the managers of the mutual funds. ole joyful...See MoreZee Vee
