Do Phalaenopsis roots need light?

Hexyl Cinnamal

I got this orchid from a friend. It had root rot to begin with and the plant went downhill and I started to save with sphag and bag method. The plant now has 6 new roots and 2 of them are 1 1/2 inches long. Now this whole time those roots have been exposed to light and I was wondering if it's safe to cover them in bark and such. Let me show you an image. As far as I know, roots are needed to absorb water, but these roots are also photosynthetic since they are green and I don't know if I am going to wind up with rot again if they are under the medium.
