Comments (28)Your home is beautiful ~ I love the windows and the view is breathtaking. Here are my suggestions. I think the arched, painted bookcases detract from the massive beauty of the fireplace stone. Maybe rough sawn cedar beam shelving, or pine, to compliment the weightiness of that beautiful fireplace? The other suggestion I have is to google log homes and notice the kinds of lighting and decor they use. Antlers made into chandeliers, stuffed birds hung from the cathedral ceiling as though in flight, bear rugs, massive log furniture. We have a log house with a big, natural stone fireplace (not as big as yours!) :-) Our floors are slate, too. Our cabinets are simple pine with black wrought iron handles. There are no arches anywhere in the house ~ everything is simple, straight and clean, emphasizing the beauty of the wood, stone, and glass. Our mouldings are made from rough sawn pine log ~ even around the fireplace mantle. The pieces which are highly visible have worm tracks in the wood, which is very cool. To us, anyway! We are down South for the winter, or I would try to post some pictures here for you. Your house is going to be just beautiful! Barbara...See MoreHelp me re-do my dining room!
Comments (13)LOVE the traditional furniture ..hate the wallpaper..Love the tray ceiling..it needs a dramatic paint job to play it up..and really go for it..don't use white. Pictures make it a little difficult to tell the origin of the wood, if it is fruit wood or a darker oak..seems a bit too light for mahogany but seems to have a more golden tone as well ..that might be the photo. you are looking toward greens and golds?..the sage green would definately work well with your woods..are you going to keep the wainscoting? I might carry one of the other room colors that adjoin through to the ceiling tray of this room..a soft golden color would add LIGHT to it..and then put a contrast on the rest of the tray outside..you might play it up with some beautiful mouldings..and maybe a medallion if you are staying traditional.. then put beautiful mouldings on your wainscot to match..and under the wainscot you could use moulding frames..sometimes this is a little difficult to figure out how to do if you are carpentry challenged..but you can go to a store and find actual picture frames in a moulding that you love and buy a whole bunch of them and glue them equally spaced on the wall below the wainscot to make panels..or squares..and then have the background painted one color and the mouldling another..i prefer lighter as darker can be a bit "overkill".. say the soft sage behind a soft vanilla moulding with a very pale french cream or darker vanilla on the top 1/2 and then the golden ceiling with the vanilla moldlings and sage up in the tray with a vanilla medallion and an antique chandelier with the oiled bronze finish.. now if you want to get a little fancier..the sage on the wainscot behind the mouldings could be of a waterstained type silk or moire..that would be stunning..saving some of the same fabric for curtains..yum... Then wouldn't it be stunning to have depressionware green glassware with some very creamy and green dishes..they would bounce off that golden reddish wood.....See MoreNeed help with family room update - please help me shop and paint!
Comments (2)I think your first task is to find a rug to set the tone for the room. You could have carpet bound in the size you need if you want to stay mono-chromatic. A tone on tone rug in cream, tan and chocolate might add a neutral but interesting touch. It only needs to be a couple of feet wider than the sofa unless you add new end tables that you want to sit on it too. I would keep it 12" away from the hearth though. Once the rug is found, if it has a variety of tones in it, use the darkest shade for your chairs. Be sure and take your tape measure with you so you can determine the right height on them. I don't think they should be taller than the sofa. I don't think the two chairs have to match, and it would be nice if one of them had a pattern to the fabric. Here is a mono-chromatic room, but with a touch of pattern and texture....See MoreHelp me redo this family room, furniture and arrangement.
