Do yourself a HUGE favor. Don't put a good rose in a sorry hole.

Comments (17)After reading this thread I am relieved that I am not alone in my constant struggle (which I am losing) to choose from a seemingly endless pile of beautiful roses. I am only one year in and I already have a wishlist a mile long, as well as a growing list of roses I have already planted that will be getting moved to the back yard this fall to make room for more of my recently realized favorites. It seems like I have a new favorite every week! I may have also gotten a little overzealous & ordered a few things that may not have a planned home yet, so it looks like some large pots are in my immediate future. I still have not accepted the reality that I will eventually have to remove a healthy rose from my garden just because I don't like the way it looks, my inner hoarder says "surely there is somewhere it can go"... Comments (23)Hello all! We got a chance to make it out to Otto and Sons today (just missing the sale unfortunately). We took a look at quite a few roses new to both of us and ended up generally going in a different direction from Austins. The Austin test bed there afforded my mom a chance to see Munstead Wood blooming in person which was very elucidating. She liked it, but didn't love it like the photos of it she had seen. She would probably still like to try it, but not enough to get several. We did get several Rose de Rescht to try however. The scent and color was very nice in person, and the shrubs looked quite nice. We also picked up a Distant Drums which is one of her favorites. I really did know it when I saw it from a distance! There were almost too many interesting things! We nearly got a Rosa Viridiflora, Rosa Rubrifolia/Glauca, Lady of Shallot, and George Burns. The one Austin we did get that most impressed my mother in person was an Ambridge Rose. I know some have reported rust, but neither I nor my mom recall ever seeing it on even the most neglected of roses that we've tried. You have to take some chances in the long run, so this will be one. Queen of Sweeden was a close second for those who had mentioned it. Much more apricot in person than most photos suggested. It may have just been the one left was not the best shrub, but Sharifa Asma didn't catch my mom's eye. It was a nice plus to add a new OGR cultivar to the ranks of the couple of true Teas, one HP, and a few older Polyanthas present (not true OGRs I know). Thanks for all of your input! I was finally able to go downstairs during the day (plaster walls are drying so NOONE is working down there today.. kind of nice actually) I think we are gong to go with BM Stone Hearth (thanks Sueb20) and for the bathroom I am going to go with BM tranquility (an affinity color). Its amazing how much color changes at different times of day. Comments (6)Cheap remnants or prefab that will work is how I would go. I would also see if the granite fab shop will do the sink cut out for cheap if it is needed. For prefab, it will already have the sink cut out for standard oval sinks....See More
6 years agoWhat are the dimensions and sun exposure of the spot you want to plant? Some roses will fade in afternoon sun.
I have only Boscobel and Lady of Shallot on your list. I try to only buy disease resistant and fragrant roses. I love both but Boscobel is shorter and upright. Ken is able to keep his LoS short but I am growing mine more as a climber.

Well, one down. While we were taking a walk, I stopped by another nursery that is within a walking distance from me and they also had a few DAs, but only Crown Princess Margareta was in bloom. I instantly fell in love. I was very impressed that all the blooms made it through rain last night. When I carried it back home (just half a mile) not one petal dropped at our slightly windy condition today. I did notice that the color is differently reflected depending on where it is positioned so I don't think she should be exposed to afternoon sun, likely to fade I think. Here she is at her new home (I already put bamboo stakes with twine to hold the stems as they are still weak while blooms abundant):
It doesn't seem that CPM would go well with MR and MW, so I definitely have to get the second one. :-)
I'll go back to the nurseries in a couple of days, when they start to bloom, to see how 'Charlotte' and others look like. 'Tess' on obelisk sounds like a grand idea too!
This is the only picture I have of the area with 'Mary Rose' (at the bottom corner) & 'Munstead Wood'. I'll move MW more up front because it doesn't grow too large for me and then perhaps another DA right behind or between them.
