Comments (10)My second year JC has been a bit on the wimpy side since I first planted it. Little vigor, limited blooming. I had such high hopes for it and love its bloom when it does bloom, but I guess it doesn't like where it is planted. I was concerned that maybe it wasn't getting enough sun, although I think it gets about 5 hours, but Devon's experience with less sun suggests that is not the problem. Guess I'll just cross my fingers and hope that it takes off on its third year like some other roses are prone to do. I really wanted to love this rose. Comments (9)I appreciate you all soooo much; I have been stalking this forum for awhile for information on which Austins to "invest" in!! LOL! I don't like to admit how many roses I have and have had, mostly David Austins. My kids are finally gone, probably shouldn't admit that because I dearly love them, but I actually can garden again!! Just counted and I seem to have 25 roses at present. I thought I was a poor gardener for many years, which may have been true because I was always carting girls to sports things, but I have realized after reading this forum, perhaps the older DA's which I had, weren't as prolific and did get BS. I am an organic gardener and the roses have to be disease resistant, lovely and have a delicious fragrance. My zone is 8 (PNW), this is why I finally am "reaching out" because I saw a post from someone else from here!! This year I ordered an obscene amount of digested manure ( a wonderful way to reduce toxins from cows if anyone hasn't heard of it). My roses never looked this good!! Even though I have tried premixed and mixing up my own organic foods for years. I also supplement with Hendrikus Bloom. Ok, long winded response to poster from PNW, I have Boscobel and Jubilee Celebration, both of which are blooming beautifully, yes JC is nodding but I agree with others that she just needs to get older! Both plants are grafted because I didn't want to wait another year since I just expanded my garden. I noticed the original leaves from the nursery plant have BS but the new leaves are very healthy with no BS or mildew. New also is Scepter d'Isle which is gorgeous. I have had the best luck here with Golden Celebration (not Graham Thomas, gets BS), Mary Rose, Lilian Austin (took years to actually rebloom quickly), Lady Emma Hamilton, Evelyn, Winchester Cathedral (white Mary Rose) and Abraham Darby ( this is the first year he has bloomed his heart out without disease, I think it's payback for the digested manure!!). While we were taking a walk, I stopped by another nursery that is within a walking distance from me and they also had a few DAs, but only Crown Princess Margareta was in bloom. I instantly fell in love. I was very impressed that all the blooms made it through rain last night. When I carried it back home (just half a mile) not one petal dropped at our slightly windy condition today. I did notice that the color is differently reflected depending on where it is positioned so I don't think she should be exposed to afternoon sun, likely to fade I think. Here she is at her new home (I already put bamboo stakes with twine to hold the stems as they are still weak while blooms abundant): It doesn't seem that CPM would go well with MR and MW, so I definitely have to get the second one. :-) I'll go back to the nurseries in a couple of days, when they start to bloom, to see how 'Charlotte' and others look like. 'Tess' on obelisk sounds like a grand idea too! This is the only picture I have of the area with 'Mary Rose' (at the bottom corner) & 'Munstead Wood'. I'll move MW more up front because it doesn't grow too large for me and then perhaps another DA right behind or between them....See MoreJubilee Celebration: a workhorse in my garden!
Comments (22)Kate, does your JC get morning sun? If not, maybe move it to a different location may help. One side of my house has very little sun and Princess Alexandra of Kent in that area doesn't bloom a lot. I'll move her to the same bed with JC this year and I think she will bloom more. Mine also has weak neck syndrome, but I figure with a lot of petals, it's not a surprise thing. The good thing is DA grow big in California, so the weak neck issue isn't a big problem for us because we still can enjoy the flowers with no problem but I can understand it can be a problem in cold areas where DA don't grow as tall. 6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoI had Jubilee Celebration in full sun and it handled it very well. The color stayed vibrant unlike other Austins in the same conditions. However, when the spring flush was over, it blackspotted terribly to the point of getting completely defoliated. It grew weaker and weaker, and I ended up removing it. But if I ever move, I will definitely plant it again. It's still my all-time favorite. I'm afraid planting it against the fence may not serve it well in our humidity.
