AC Condenser Repair?

aztec123

We purchased our house 4 years ago and have been struggling
to heat/cool it efficiently ever since.
We have had a lot of sealing and insulating done and it has helped in
terms of comfort and cost to heat/cool, but we have a ways to go. Now one of the AC condensers is occasionally
making a horrendous grinding noise for 2-5 seconds when it starts up. I have three condensers and three air
handlers. All the condensers were
replaced new in 2011/2012 prior to our purchase of the house. The model that is making noise is a Goodman 5
ton SSX160591. I called the company that did the replacement
back in 2011/12. He came out looked at
it for about 10 seconds, and said the unit is failing, is out of warranty, and
I will need to replace it. Let’s just
say I have reason to question his level of expertise. The unit works fine except for the grinding
noise at startup. Is there no way to repair these units? Seems like it is still fairly new, and a
shame to go through the whole (expensive) process of replacing it. I can try and post an audio file of the noise
it makes at startup – its hard to describe, but it sounds like an extended/louder
version of the sound all the condensers make when they start up, and it really
shakes the whole side of the house by the unit.

Also, is there a good book or website where I can educate
myself a bit on residential HVAC options?
I think at some point I am going to have to replace the whole system
(the air handlers were NOT replaced on 2011/12 and are 15 years old). Given we have struggled with the house HVAC
system since we bought it, I’m wondering if there are better alternatives. It’s a big, weirdly-shaped house (5800+
square feet).

Thanks for any guidance.
