Bathroom wall painting, one coat or two coats?
Comments (5)Thank you very much, Chris and funcolors, especially Chris for your very detailed information. I'll go for BM kitchen and bath satin finish paint. It claims to be self priming on most surfaces. So after sanding to lightly remove the sheen, can I apply the BM paint directly for two coats and skip priming? I interviewed another GC for my bathroom remodel, he also said one coat was enough. They just don't want to take more time to do a better job. I'll offer $100 more for one more coat. If the GC still insisted on one coat only, I would hire a painter later or do it myself. Thank you very much....See MoreNecessary to prime old plaster walls prior to repair/skim coat?
Comments (2)I would do the repairs /hole patches prior to priming - but lathe and plaster surfaces must be washed & scrubbed clean and free of loose debris, and you should use a bonding agent made to adhere new plaster to old. (I like pro-bond which is sold as a concrete bonder but says in tiny print can be used on plaster). Someone else can speak to the skim coat question - are you proposing to cover entire wall or just uneven areas? If the latter, then I would just paint on bonding agent + finish plaster to level out - and then prime entire surface - Gardz for "problem surfaces" like calcimine, wall paper - although with wallpaper and paste if its the old wheat paste that stuff comes off easily with hot water and a scrub brush - really should get off anyting loose thats easy to take off. Hope yer enjoying the journey - it can be long and tiring but the destination is worth it!...See MoreIs a prep sink always necessary?
Comments (81)If you only have one and you don't compost - put it on the Prep Sink. That's where you'll be creating the most "leavings". If you compost all food scraps, then it may not matter. We don't compost and I made the mistake of ignoring the advice here about putting it on the prep sink. We originally planned for two, but my DH was in a cost saving binge and decided we only needed one - and he wanted it on the cleanup sink (his sink!). I regret "giving in" to that - if I had it to do over, I would have fought to either keep two or tell him since he wanted to give up one, he could give up his! (He deferred to me on most things, so I got my way in probably 90% of the remodel, do I don't begrudge him the GD too much - unless I'm in the middle of a big cooking project!) Next house, they both get one, assuming WV allows them on septic! We do have the InSinkerator Septic Assist model - in our current MD county, you can have a GD if it's designed for septic systems....See MoreBag cabinets twice for two coats of paint?
