Nothing says it has to be blue. It can be any color you want. Pale yellow or pale rose would be great on an older home.

There's nothing crisper than white. However, blue is nice too. What would give you joy?

For resale, as simple as possible is probably best. A nice white won't detract, and the next owner can have the fun of saying "oooh, we could paint the porch roof..."

@Sophie, I'm afraid pink would narrow my pool of buyers especially since it's really just a 20 year old renovated ranch without historical charm (just in a very historic area). Interesting thought, though!

@Gray, I'm not sure what color would give me joy but having this thing done, selling the house, and all my crap packed and moved would bring me a tremendous amount of joy...lol.

Given the target market, I'd find the right blue.

your ceiling already looks blue because of the floor reflected. so whatever color you choose, keep in mind its going to be shifted a bit by the flooring. rather than painting it un-white and having it clash with the floor, i'd go white.

@ninigret, the floor will get a coat of SW's Deck and Dock in a dark brown that matches current stain color (before it got faded and dirty from dust and debris). Do you think it'll still reflect blue once painted?

no, it will reflect dark brown. i'd paint the floor blue grey. 1. dark brown will make the whole porch darker than it is now as it will reflect on the wall and ceiling 2. every footstep on the porch will leave a dust mark from the shoes. paint the floor an enhanced dust color.. so, dust + blue is blue grey.

another strategy if you have a lot of pollen is to go with a blue green grey, the pollen is a lot less noticeable. sure you still have to sweep/vacuum but it wont look yellow again 5 min later.

@ninigret, if the existing porch and railing had not been dark brown, I would have chosen a different color BUT since we are trying to make the Deck and Dock (at $62/gallon regular price) go as far as possible, we chose to go back over it with the same color. I'm already 15 gallons in, which luckily, I got at 40% off a couple of weeks ago. If we were staying at the house, I'd care more about the footprints, etc. but I'm basically slapping lipstick on a pig right now.

I ended up going with Eider White with Pure White for the trim pieces. The painters should finish that part up tomorrow so I'm crossing my fingers it all works :)

Go blue but find the right one because the reflection can also change the look of your interior paint. People will remember your blue ceiling porch when they leave. I painted the interior of my front door SW Watery before placing it on the market. The last thing they saw was the "blue door". subliminal but it works. Later discussions will give potential buyers one feature that stood out among a pool of homes.

Plot twist: Eider White looked peach/pink against the Pure White trim so we are recoating the entire ceiling with Pure White as the safest choice. Not the contrast I was hoping for but at this point, my painters need to be done by tomorrow. Ugh, color/lighting can be so frustrating!!

Tradewind or Topsail?

The Pure White looks really good. In some lighting, it even reflects its blue undertone which looks okay with the brick color. I can't wait to post the finished house pic because I'm so pleased with how it turned out. Landscaping is going in today and paint is being finished. Now we just need to hang the front shutters and do the flowers.

Here is the almost finished project. I did add two planters flanking each side of the picture window that I feel balances with the shutters on the other front windows. We are still waiting on the iron fabricator to finish the step railing.

It looks great. We sold our home in November. The thought then and the thought now is “ isn’t it sad how much effort we put into our homes getting ready to sell them, but we live with them as is because we don’t want to spend the money and time and effort to do it?”

our philosophy is to keep our home in repair such that it could be on the market with 2 days notice. not decorating to someone elses style... just our own.... but clean, unburdened with boxes of stuff we dont need, and no dents and marks on the walls. but my husband and i also always had our term papers done before they were due, so its a personality thing i think, p_p.

thats not to say i'd not have to make a couple trips to the senior center with my yarn stash.....

Ninigret our homes are always pretty meticulous so I don't think it has anything to do with personality per se. There are always things that need to get done when placing a home on the market to make it sell quickly.

@Ninigret and pink_peony, the changes we've made are ones we have wanted to do for years but every time we had the money saved to do it, something more urgent came up that had to be tackled. Then, the contractor we had lined up to do it moved out of state. It has taken us months to find someone who could get to us because we are in a hot market/economy here which hopefully equates to us selling quickly and for top dollar ;)

The step railing goes in tomorrow morning (snafu with it today) and professional photos after that. Hoping to be listed by Friday :)
