For those wanting a Haint Blue ceiling...

People have requested a paint for such a ceiling and I've kept forgetting to go find my paint sample with the name of the paint I used. Got my act together today so here it is.

I used SW 6484 "Meander Blue", but I used it HALF-STRENGTH. After many cans of paint coming home with me, it was the winner, but I quickly discovered how paint on a ceiling is far darker than the same paint on a wall - don't get the light. But half-strength is perfect.

I used this on my beadboard sun porch and also on the beadboard over a small, narrow porch over my front door. I'm very happy with it!

I think the ceiling painted in the same color tends to look cooler than the same color on the walls?

When you say 1/2 strength what do you mean, cut w/white, w/water? Every time I cut paint w/something it goes wrong for me. Your beautiful paint looks on the aqua side from my phone.

bossyvossy, half strength means the paint store cuts the formula by half.

I wanted to paint my sister's porch ceiling (and shutters out front) a beautiful French Blue. Her HOA said no.... even though house two doors down, the entire back porch, upper and lower roofs, are painted Battleship Grey. No joke. It's horrid.

I wonder if only some colors look darker on the ceiling? In our new home, all the ceilings (but the kitchen) are painted the wall colors, and the ceilings look lighter to me.

bronwynsmom there are so many 'haint blues , fun colors has done essentially a treatise on them that is on line. I was lucky enough to find the original color under the luan ceiling that had been placed over our original 1890 porch ceiling. One must look to the area one lives in order to find the exact color that one should use. It really does matter. I have since found 2 more intact ceilings in my area and they have the same blue as mine from the same decade. It you go to SC or to LA or MS you will find a whole different color and many more stories as to why the 'haints stay away. I also have a blue bottle tree in my garden to add to the repelling of 'haints !! It is common in Louisiana and Mississippi and other southern areas to paint the trims on doors and windows a blue for the same reason..the spirits can't cross the blue. I will take all the protection I can get :) I hope the po is finding this helpful and doesn't think we are nutso ! c

THANKS everyone for your wonderful comments/support on my Haint Blue (or just blue, whatever the case may be!!!) porch ceiling. I truly LOVE it .... and it IS a nice surprise for anyone walking up to the porch. As for keeping insects away, we'll have to see, as here in Michigan, we are winding down our insect season. mtnrdredux .... I can't imagine trying/sampling 14 different blues. I like the Martha blue you chose .... and even tho in MI, I am so loving Trailrunner's Blue on our porch. Re: the front door ~ it is NOT original to our home. The original was a narrower door with full oval glass (beveled) in wood. But the molding around the glass, had a few missing/broke pieces. And we didn't really know how to *fix* it. And one day I saw in the Renovation Magazine THIS door and knew that's what I wanted. It is by Marvin Windows and Doors and is wood .... and I LOVE it too. Trailrunner .... yes, the swing matches the doors pretty darn good and looks great in our yard!!! Again, THANKS so much for all the kind words .... much appreciated :) jody

Especially outside, I find colors lose their vibrancy and saturation. Maybe I'll paint my little porch alcove ceiling a blue to give it some dimension.

I'm not a colour expert, let's just get that said at the start lol. Looking at Ben Moore's site, one of the suggested colours to go with perspective is a violet something or other. Clicking through to that, a similar color to it is called Celestia: It's not what I would consider a traditional haint blue, but it seems like it would go well with your cabinets and walls. You could lighten it by 25 or 50% if it seems too dark.

Our local BM store sells a special blue ceiling paint. I don't remember what they call it, but it works. Keeps the wasps & dirt daubers from building nests. We have it on all 3 open porches. No need on the screened porch.

What part of the country is this commonly done? It's a lovely touch but I can't say I've seen any porch painted like that IRL.

It’s very common in New England, and has been for as long as I can remember. Also in the South.
