Haint Blue Porch Ceilings
Comments (15)Squirrle, to some the idea of Haint Blue is indeed blue-blue. Light blue, baby blue, sky blue, pale blue, pastel blue. Those flavors of blue on porch ceilings likely started with the Victorians, but would not meet the spiritual notions of Haint Blue. There's a whole bunch of theories that goes with the Victorian blue porch ceilings. From helping to reflect light into the home to mimicking the blue sky while under roof to keeping wasps from building nests, etc. Haint Blue when put in practice to ward off spirits is a not a dulled or pale blue. The color is strong and saturated even when the value is light. Paint colors back in the day were mixed by hand, not computer formulas, so you'll find all different versions of Haint Blue from perwinkle to blue-greens. I have the samples from the Savannah H.S. They are blue-green. You can definitely see a green side to the colors. If you ask for Haint Blue at a paint store and they produce a chip and says "this is Haint Blue", it's simply a case of someone choosing a color from that brand's collection that meets a general expectation of what Haint Blue should look like so they have a chip to hand to their customer who ask for the color. The Savannah H.S. was likely no different. In the 80's someone made a decision to call these colors Haint Blue. It wasn't too well received when they did it either. Haint Blue is a culturally iconic hue, and the Savannah H.S. deciding to specify a color as *the* Haint Blue offended some people. People for whom the color is meaningful and important. Their relationship with the color is not based on aesthetics or color fluff. If you want a Haint Blue porch ceiling, I think simply choosing a blue that works with your house and strikes your fancy is a good route to go....See MoreAnyone have a haint blue porch ceiling?
Comments (3)I don't have a picture yet, but I just got off the phone with a local lumber yard, inquiring about Azek beadboard - the salesman recommended a new product by HB&G Columns, which comes in a sky blue. He's going to price it tomorrow and check availability, but thinks it will be equivalent in cost to the Azek (which we would need to paint). Comments (23)THANKS everyone for your wonderful comments/support on my Haint Blue (or just blue, whatever the case may be!!!) porch ceiling. I truly LOVE it .... and it IS a nice surprise for anyone walking up to the porch. As for keeping insects away, we'll have to see, as here in Michigan, we are winding down our insect season. mtnrdredux .... I can't imagine trying/sampling 14 different blues. I like the Martha blue you chose .... and even tho in MI, I am so loving Trailrunner's Blue on our porch. Re: the front door ~ it is NOT original to our home. The original was a narrower door with full oval glass (beveled) in wood. But the molding around the glass, had a few missing/broke pieces. And we didn't really know how to *fix* it. And one day I saw in the Renovation Magazine THIS door and knew that's what I wanted. It is by Marvin Windows and Doors and is wood .... and I LOVE it too. Trailrunner .... yes, the swing matches the doors pretty darn good and looks great in our yard!!! Again, THANKS so much for all the kind words .... much appreciated :) jody...See MorePerfect "Haint Blue" to go with SW Mega Greige?
Comments (2)I have 2 colors in my house that I just remodeled after the flood. SW Mega Greige and SW Krypton. They go great together. There's such a range and variety of haint blue all depending on who you ask. I don't know if krypton would be listed in the category or not but I love it. I get so many compliments on it and requests for the name. My reality was just buying lots of samples till I hit the happy place. And in all types of light and day and night. My Mega Greige can look almost mauve at some times of the day and others it looks like chocolate milk. Krypton sometimes looks very gray and other times very blue and then the perfect blue gray....See Morejod9302
