Wowsa ! That turned out great ! I wasn't sure how the red was going to go but it looks so pretty . You did a great job...so did your colorist LOL. I bet that new ( old) red swing really adds a lot to the whole pretty scene. c

Very nice. I am a fan of blue porch ceilings because I have one, too.

I tried 14 colors to get just the right shade of haint.

i also googled quite extensively to see if there was an official haint paint, but I found that haint is open to interpretation. And of course, we are in the Northeast, so the light does not support Carribbean interpretations of haint.

I think I tried 14 colors because, on principle i didn't want to use my first try, Martha Stewart's "Porch Ceiling Blue". I mean, Martha, I don't need you for that! Uhh, turns out I did.

PS JJean, love your colors, your house number, and the curve within a square of your door trim.

mtn: the color is what I found on the original ceiling that was discovered when we removed the po's remuddle of the porch ceiling . It is the "haint blue" that is indigenous to our area. The reason I know this is that a friend has an 1890 bldg with a bead board porch and underneath the repaints you can scrape back to the original wood and viola there is the same blue. I took the old wood to the SW dealer and they color matched. On my old thread when I did my porch you can see all the pics. Fun colors requested and received a sample of my wood and the paint for her documentation. She wrote the definitive article that you find on the internet when you look up "haint blue". Great subject, isn't it ?? :)

The porch ceiling looks great - but I think you are confusing two topics here. Haint blue is a very electric blue which is painted around doors and windows. The purpose is to keep out the "haints", also called "night riders". Supposedly it is a hag that sits on your chest and steals your breath. Blue porch ceilings around here are usually a very faint blue and are the traditional way to paint your porch. There is no connection to the haint blue phenomenon, which is a largely rural fixture. I live in Gullah country, Charleston, SC - so we have tons of both haint blue and blue porch ceilings around here.

st: here is a link to some history of " haint blue". Not to derail Jjean's post but to clarify. It most definitely is not one color. You are right that it was used on doors and windows but also ceilings...the spirits were thought to fly up into the blue ceiling and on through and out. The colors were mixed on site in the early 1850's by the builder's using local pigments. Every place has/had its own shade ...no pun.

My ceiling dates from 1890 when the house was built. The original color was applied at that time and then covered with other colors later on. There are numerous links that explain all of the history. I have included one. Hope this helps to clear up the info. c

Looks great! We painted all open porch ceilings a shade of blue too ... name is not important. It definitely helps keep the insect population down!

Gorgeous porch. Glad I check back to see if the picture were working! I remember reading trailrunners but didn't understand the hype. Now I do. Fabulous story! I've never seen that around Oklahoma but think it might look great on my front porch.

natal, does it really help insects? My porch is horrible in the evening due to all the bugs.

I'm not going to say it stops all of them, but the reduced numbers is nothing short of remarkable!

THANKS everyone for your wonderful comments/support on my Haint Blue (or just blue, whatever the case may be!!!) porch ceiling. I truly LOVE it .... and it IS a nice surprise for anyone walking up to the porch.

As for keeping insects away, we'll have to see, as here in Michigan, we are winding down our insect season.

mtnrdredux .... I can't imagine trying/sampling 14 different blues. I like the Martha blue you chose .... and even tho in MI, I am so loving Trailrunner's Blue on our porch.

Re: the front door ~ it is NOT original to our home. The original was a narrower door with full oval glass (beveled) in wood. But the molding around the glass, had a few missing/broke pieces. And we didn't really know how to *fix* it. And one day I saw in the Renovation Magazine THIS door and knew that's what I wanted. It is by Marvin Windows and Doors and is wood .... and I LOVE it too.

Trailrunner .... yes, the swing matches the doors pretty darn good and looks great in our yard!!!
