You can do it on any porch ceiling. Doesn't matter when your house was built or the style.

fuzzywuzzer, so it doesn't matter that I match the blue with my shutters? Probably would look best to do the same shade only lighter.

I have googled blue porch ceilings and have seen so many different shades.

We live in a house built in 1997; the house is the color of wet cement with white trim and a patent black door. I painted the porch ceiling sky blue and I love it. No one's noticed it (which is good). I'll take a pic later.

rmkitchen, I would love to see a picture. If you love it, how disappointing that no one notices. I guess unless you have an elevated front porch (which I don't) it wouldn't be noticeable unless you looked up. I would make a point of telling everyone to look up.

Welllll. . . . I can tell ya a lil bit about haint blues and porch ceilings.

I've been deeply - let's say *involved* - with the topic since 2007. Done a lot of research, been a lot of places - studied the myths, history and phenomenona of painting porch ceilings blue.

To answer your question whether any style of home can work a blue porch ceilings, the answer is yes.

The key is that you get the right blue to work with the color palette of the home as well as get the right pitch of nuance to work with the exposure of light, or the amount and quality of light.

You can break the haint blues down into three HUE families or categories. Haint Blue - like historically correct Haint Blues - will be aqua with a green undertone, periwinkle with a redish/purplish undertone, or azure as in a classically agreed upon "sky" blue.

Within each HUE family the value runs very, very light to deep and dark. The reason for the range in light to dark value is that Haint Blue colors were applied to other areas beside the porch ceiling. i.e. the darker colors are a good choice for shutters, window trim, doors.

I have an elevated porch also so it is not viewed unless you walk up the steps. What a nice surprise...for me, my guests and the unsuspecting 'haints ! c

My house is a colonial built in 1947. The porch, which is on the side of the house, was added later. I don't know if the colonists painted their porch ceilings blue, but I did cuz I like it. You should, too.

kmarcel -- you are sweet! It only bothered me that Mr. Unobservant (aka my partner) didn't notice, even after we discussed it and I told him I'd done it.

So we live in a usually dry climate (Boulder, CO) but this past summer it was (for us) really humid, so we had a problem with mosquitoes congregating on the porch ceiling. We lit candles but that's dangerous, and we tried some other homeopathic / non-toxic fixes but not of them worked, so we thought "let's do it blue!"

That did somewhat ameliorate the mosquito problem but then a bird promptly built a nest in there, and it was an angry bird, yelling at us whenever we used the front door.

But I still like the blue, regardless of insects. I think it's chipper and welcoming and I like that it's associated with the South. I painted it BM's Yarmouth Blue, had it color-matched at Lowe's (closer & cheaper!). Looks dark in the picture but in real life it's lighter.

Sweet picture! !! That is one precious boy !! I forgot we are supposed to look at the porch ceiling ...it looks great . If you look at kmarcel's post she has a similar brick so she perhaps should use the same blue as you used. Very nice rm. c

I really Love the black adirondack chairs, stars and front door! Really love the black! not so crazy about the blue ceiling idea.....it's going to look dowdy....not upscale like you have now....JMO

I love the blue ceilings...I really wanted one when we added a front porch but the contractor talked us into a white vinyl beadboard ceiling instead, which I have regretted since. Would painting vinyl work ok? I just imagine it peeling off the next time we get a Nor'easter. BTW, rmkitchen, I envy you living in Boulder--I lived there for 10 years and still miss it; it's such a great place to live.

When I pulled in my driveway yesterday, I made a point of looking at my front porch ceiliing, which I never have before and to my amazement, it was visible from the driveway. It is white beadboard, but in vinyl so I think it will look great painted.I will probably do a very pale blue because I have to be careful with my blue shutters that it doesn't clash.

memazz, you can paint the vinyl. We had our whole house painted many years ago. I didn't like the shade of green that it was and it would have been out of our budget to replace the siding. Never any peeling, has held up great.

I think yours will be lovely. I like that your pillows have a blue stripe. If you take those with you and also a piece of paper with a large sample of your shutter color it will really help you get a ceiling color that will blend. Good Luck. c

memazz, you can definitely paint vinyl. Just go to SW and tell them what you are wanting to do. They will get you the correct paint.

I painted mine a few years ago because I dislike the dark brown. Power washed it and then used some paint from SW and looks great.

Only thing to be aware of it does often void any warranty on the vinyl from the manufacture.

I am so excited about tackling this project. Not sure if the cold weather is going to hold off enough though.

Just would like a little more advice on colors. Not sure if I should start a new thread. My house is beige, shutters a colonial blue and my front door is eggplant color, as I stated before. I really would like to change front door color. My front door is recessed -- doesn't stand out really well from the street, so the color is always lost. Also, because there is a full glass storm that seems to make it disappear even more.

I really like the look of a red door with the blue ceiling. I know it's hard to tell without a photo, but does it seem as though these colors would work?

My roof is dark brown, so that ruins the ideas of the beige/black shutters and red door. Thoughts?

I would say unless you really don't like the look of your blue shutters to leave them as they are and just play with the door color. (Painting shutters is a lot of work...)

We have colonial red doors that were painted 5 years ago and really need a repaint; they have faded out a lot.

With a beige house and colonial blue shutters, I'd suggest a door color in the same tone as the shutters, but darker...here's one I found by Googling that's from the GW Old House forum:

I am in love with a red door! I'm also in love with an eggplant door, but I know what you mean about the storm door hiding the color. I'm going to guess that a candy apple red might show up better. I am really excited for you and look forward to seeing your pictures!

If you have an eggplant color door, why not go with a lavender porch ceiling? I like an unexpected pop of color, such as in beekeeperswife's coat closet (for those that have not seen it, it is a hot pink, with a very normal subdued exterior).

memazz and dianalo your color suggestions are great. Hadn't thought of either of those choices and didn't see your posts until after I painted my door red.

I went with BM Heritage Red, which is really red, like the oolor of red in the flag, maybe a little brighter. I can't tell yet if I like it because it's been open all day so it will dry so I can't see if from outside to make up my mind. It's high 40's here today and constant rain.

I also bought the blue - BM "under the big top" for the ceiling. I hope the weather gets a little better tomorrow so I can paint the porch.

One other question if I might. I only have one sidelight and that has always been the color of my door. Should I paint that the red as well or white to match my trim?
