Comments (8)I can't see you collecting any water that way. When it rains it isn't normally that much water, maybe an inch or less and that would be all that is in your tub. If you don't use the water right away it would all just evaporate before you could use it. The reason rain barrels work is because you are collecting far more water than you would if it was just an open container. Lets say it rains an inch, your tripod container would only collect about an inch of water. A rain barrel (of the same diameter) in the same situation would collect several feet of water because it has a much larger surface area over which it is collecting. Another possible to supplement your ziplocs and garbage bags would be to track down some 44-gallon plastic drums. If you are in a dairy farming area, they use various chemicals in quantity for keeping the milking shed hygienic. And the drums have the added advantage of being easily fitted with a pump mechanism or a simple spigot for drawing water. You can also link them to a water capture system from outside and connect them with a siphoning hose so you collect more water for use. Comments (6)Some botulism strains will grow at refrigerator temperatures, so an infused oil with fresh garlic or herbs should be kept only for short-term use (within a week). Ellie Topp developed a method for heating oil used in infusions. Heating oil drives off water and greatly reduces risk. Page 2 of the brochure at the link explains her method. However, with a delicate oil you might prefer to infuse and strain. The reason jessicavanderhoff's oil hasn't proved a problem is that the solids are strained out before refrigeration. It's the low-acid solids left in oil that present the greatest risk. Oils can always be infused safely with dried product (i.e. dried red peppers) and acids (i.e. lemon peel). Comments (10)Grainlady's "Sassy Water" is fab (see below for post/recipe saved on my computer). Follow the proportions. When I've winged it, it hasn't been nearly as good. And do use water that starts out tasting good, or else purified. I use my favorite spring water. I've never added the tea bags, and generally can't get spearmint, so use regular garden mint. I made a LOT of "Sassy Water" last summer (Prevention Magazine Recipe from the Flat Belly Diet). It's supposed to be for weight loss (which I wasn't aware of when I had it at a friends home and asked for the recipe), but it WAS a good use for all those cucumbers and mint from the garden and a nice refreshing drink. You will find several versions of this recipe on-line. I also added a couple flavored tea bags to the mixture like Lemon Zinger, Wild Berry Zinger, Bigelo Perfect Peach Herb Tea or Celestial Seasonings Country Peach Passion to give it different flavors and colors.
