I am so mad at myself!

I had a lot of seedlings come up from the two vincas I had that died in the freeze. I put them into little 6-packs and they were doing so well. Then I got busy one day and didn't water them, and now all but a few are dead. I see a few more out there, and I'm hoping that if I water that area a lot, more will come up.

Sometimes, I swear, I just can't keep up. I was looking forward to those flowers! Butterflies and bees love them so much.

I've done such things a million times, Mike... it's depressing, to be sure... but it happens to the most careful of people. On the good side, they're beautiful flowers, and all the plant's energy will now go toward the second spike of blooms, if that makes you feel any better. I know how bad it feels... but I bet I'm way more clumsy than you'll ever be! Can you fall UP stairs? I can! Have you ever fallen INTO a car? I have! The old man says, "expect the worst and you'll never be disappointed!" He means it rather jokingly, but it does hold a bit of truth.

LOL, as you have discovered, Lee Valley Tools can be addictive. I have two of the maslin pans, one with the lid and one without (an existing glass lid fits that one). The nice thing is being all stainless, the pan can be used in the oven for stews or whatever. It's also excellent for marinara or any acidic sauces where you want to use something nonreactive. The stainless is a very high quality, not susceptible to pitting. Since it has an encapsulated bottom, one caution. I found with my new big gas range that I have to be careful not to kick up the power too high. If the flames lick at the pan above the disk, the jam will scorch on the sides. It's not been a problem since I figured it out, but due to the nature of the pan, jam will cook more quickly. This is ideal for flavor and set but requires careful monitoring. Carol

I'm holding that little family in my thoughts & in my heart. My neighbors, husband & wife, lost a nearly-full-term baby boy; the hospital said they could have him cremated, or buried, or they could take him home. so they brought him home, & he's buried on their land (legal in Texas). The neighbor & his wife learned that the parents of some stillborn or miscarried babies had no place to bury the little ones, & the county cremated them or buried them in "potter's fields". So they got the hospital to dedicate a small area as an "Angel's Garden"; it has benches & angel statues & paths among beautiful flowers, & bereaved parents can have their little ones' ashes scattered into the flower gardens. heartbreaking to think of the necessity for such a thing, but it's comforting to know that grieving parents now have a beautiful place to sit in, to reflect & to remember.

Breathe... I have a similar layout where my island (with cooktop and focal point copper hood) is not centered in front of my sink and window on the wall behind, OR with the wall-of-windows opposite. I tried for WEEKS (on paper) to find a way to line them up before finally admitting that the functional sacrifices that 8" move would necessitate just weren't worth it! So we built off-center. And I rationalized it by saying the only way they'd actually look 'off center' is if you were standing right in the center line of one looking straight at the other - and THEN got picky! I figured that most of the time, you'd be standing or working slightly over to one side or the other, and the eye would assume they were centered and it was just the angle of the viewer. And that's exactly how it plays out in real life. So breathe! Don't worry, and if in doubt, take another look at the gorgeous kitchen Als6w posted. Many, MANY of the kitchens we see in real life are off-center or asymmetrical, and we just don't see it.

Good luck with the rest, OP. This is my first time/season starting plants from seeds (harvested from nursery zinnias, and milkweed & tithonia seeds). I feel I may have gotten ahead of myself as many seedlings sprouted this week, and I'm headed out of town next week for a week...and weather here in TX is starting to heat up. :/ DH will be here, but gardening isn't his thing. I'll need to rig up a no-fail watering regimen for him to stick with, and I'll just hope for the best.

BTW, what type of vinca do you have? I'm only familiar with the common types sold at local nurseries and big box stores. I've tried them only once many years ago, but they succumbed to some sort of fungus.

What a shame! I've done that plenty of times myself.

1 thing I do to keep myself from forgetting, is try to put the plants where I will see them every day. You know the old saying, "out of sight, out of mind."...

Javiwa, I just have the common vincas sold in garden centers. I managed to get some natives once that were pink and white with a red eye, but they died and I haven't been able to find any more.

carol, I had them where I would see them every day. I just got too busy to look at them or water them.

I managed to find 6 more to put into one of the dead 6-packs, and I'm just going to pray a few more come up. I'm not hopefuly, though. It's already too hot for them to sprout, I think.
