Help filling awkward empty space!

Recently moved into a rental apartment and have managed to avoid making any new holes - would like to keep it that way if possible. The main living area is shaped like a giant L, so we had to section it off ourselves. We set up a dining area and created a small book nook (we're waiting for our second chair to arrive), but now we have a square of empty space in the middle of everything - too small to be functional, but too big to ignore. FYI, the cat in the photos has a tendency to knock over anything that isn't sturdy or well-braced. Any suggestions?
