My dogs ears.....
Comments (43)I've been reading all the info here as my 4 month old Havanese has an ear infection. I took Tucker to the vet 4 days after I picked him up. He was scratching his ears so bad, poor little pup I felt so sorry for him, he's such a good affectionate lovable little pup. I figured he probaly had mites. Like all of you, one hate to see your pet suffer for any reason. The vet flushed and pulled lots of hair from his ears which looked almost closed with all the hair, and the test showed it as an yeast infection. I've been putting the Tri-Otic in his ears every day and massage it down in the canal (this part he likes), but it's getting that point of the little tube in his ear this is the BIG problem, he will lay still, till I'm about the time I'm ready to squeeze the tube then he starts squirming, then it's so hard to hang onto him! and get this, he don't even weigh 5lbs.! I've also been able to flush his ears a couple of times and he act like his ears don't hurt at all anymore, which makes me happy, but have another week of putting this medicine in his ears so I'm hoping somebody here can help me with the squirming pup 'sindrums'sp. If he every have this again, and I hope not, I'll see if there is a powder form to put in his food. I'm also thinking of changing his food as some of suggest. Comments (4)that is wrong. IMHO only a very egotistical (or possibly cruel) person would feel the need to mutilate their pet for their own flight of fancy. Also I'm quite surprised the owner found someone to do this to their dog, unless he did it himself??? Seems to me nowadays most vets are very conservative about mutilating pets for the owners whims. Many won't perform tail docking & most definitely not ear cropping. The AVMA is against it too. If I were acquainted w/the owner, I'd have a hard time not reporting him. But likely there'd be no punishment or consequences, so I guess it would be for naught. Here is a link that might be useful: American Vet. Med. Assn. Comments (8)Awww! So cute! Dog ears should be rinsed generoulsy with ear cleaning solution. This cleans the gunk out and usually causes the dog to shake their head vigorously, which further dislodges the dirt and "stuff" from the canals. I then use a cotton ball to clean the exterior and interior, as much and as gently as I can. Dogs licking each other's ears isn't going to clean the ear canals, where bacterial and yeast infections can fester. If you find your dog's ears need constant cleaning, and get brown "potatoes" as I call them, you should have your vet test for bacteria and yeast. Both are easily treated with medication. Of course, you need to watch for ear scratching, rubbing and sensitivity, too. Beagles, unfortunately, are prone to ear infections. Comments (11)Look inside the ear & see if there's a bunch of black gunky stuff that looks something like coffee grounds; that would be ear mites. You can "wash" them out with mineral oil, & then add a bit more mineral oil to suffocate any survivors. Put it in a squirt bottle & gently put a little in the ear, massage it externally, down into the base of the ear, & stand back. If the ear is swollen, red, hot, and/or hard, there's an infection, & I think you have to consult a vet....See More
