Black trim mania (exterior paint advice wanted)

We're going to paint the exterior of our home white with black gutters. That part is decided already. We have a designer helping us (HOA making us use a designer to get colors beyond the norm). Our designer said she'd paint the pediments above each window black as well as part of the door frame (outside part) and the swirly design between the top of the door and porch light. Does that seem like black trim overkill? Our door will be painted light blue most likely. If we don't paint the frame and pediments everything but the shutters/door will be white.

Comments (16)My concern with a black and white scheme and the look you are going for is this: the typical "modern farmhouse" or other white with black window houses generally have pretty balanced massing (if not nearly symmetrical on some elevation), and a uniform window size and placement. Your house, a 1970s rancher has a functionalist window placement, sizing and placing the windows based on the inside needs first, rather than the facade, and the windows are kind of small compared to wall area, which is also typical of the style of house you have. I am not sure but I think a pure black/white scheme would emphasize some things in not such a good way. I would consider reversing the scheme in a way and doing a grey house with white trim, unless you are going to enlarge the existing windows and add more. Comments (0)I think we have settled on SW 6194 Basil for the house color only because I really like green houses. However, if you have an eye for color, please feel free to offer a different color. All I know is I hate this light blue. We originally thought SW 6193 Privilege green with SW 6236 Grays Harbor, but I really want a slightly darker green house. However, if we go with this darker green, I cannot figure out what color to paint the trim. Our garage door and our back facing windows have been replaced with a stone color and I don't want to paint them. (The front wood windows are the originals but will be replaced with the stone vinyl windows in the next year or 2.) I just bought SW 9111 Antler Velvet to try with them (we think our windows are close to SW 9110 Malabar) and I don't like it at all. If you have any advice, I would appreciate it. I like earthy colors. I like the idea of a blue trim with the Basil, but I really have no idea if that color combo would work AND I don't know which SW color. Comments (5)I would not replace the roof. A creamy white stain after you repair the siding would look modern. The window frames seem to be bronze, which is good, so you could paint the garage doors the same or get glass ones. A glass balcony would help with the modern feel. Nice house.
