Paint Design Dilemma living room

Tray ceilings or something else for these 10ft ceilings?

These are pics of a home plan we really love, ceilings are 10ft now, and as you can see it is an open floorpan. I'm thinking that the ceiling could have more interest, but I don't want it to be too busy. Love angled tray ceilings, but needed some advice as to where to put them. Just in living room? Or dining? or both? Or maybe just paint ceiling something other than white? Also considering board and batten in white halfway up all around the rooms. Advice? Thanks!

You can break it up and do a low profile tray ceiling over the living room area, and dining room and kitchen you can add beam detail.

The architect says we can keep the 10ft ceilings and go up to 11ft in the trays. What would you consider a low profile tray, something less than 1ft?

If you've never been in a room that was badly proportioned due to too-high ceilings, you may not really believe there is such a thing. But there is, and it feels awful. Just very wrong -- but hard to put your finger on why. As a general rule, 9' is safe and comfortable for just about any room size. Higher ceilings can be are nice in large rooms; and 8' ceilings are wonderful for cozier spaces. One trick we've learned in this house is that a small area with lower ceilings at the entry to a larger space really 'opens up' the room with 8' ceilings. Our downstairs hallway has 7'6" ceilings, which we thought was a problem until we lived there a while. But now the 8' ceilings in the kitchen and den at either end feel much nicer, and the 'transition spaces' really function as transitions.

If you look at the last page of the specification sheet for the CR6, you will find the Application Reference table which shows an example spacing and the illumination. From the table Using a 4x4 spacing, the 800 lumen version will give 47 foot candles while the 625 version will give 36, all for a 10' ceiling. It would be advantageous to reduce the number of cans/ pots - reduced install cost, fewer holes in the ceiling. In the kitchen the overhead lighting would likely be augmented/ supplemented by under cabinet lighting. When installed, there is little visible difference between the CR6 variants. The higher output versions may appear to produce more glare. The UCL would provide better task lighting than what would be possible from the overhead lights. Should I paint area in tray ceiling something other than white?

My new build is getting close to complete, they are painting the interior now. I have a tray ceiling in the master bedroom, with crown molding at the bottom of it, and putting tape lighting in the crown cavity to illuminate the tray ceiling area. Six 4" recessed cans surround the tray ceiling, and we are going to put some sort of light or fan in the center of the tray ceiling area. So right now, the whole ceiling is painted white, and the crown trim is like a semi gloss white. Walls in the room are Sherwin Williams accessible beige. I've seen a few pics online where the short walls and ceiling in the tray area were painted a different color, and I like the look. Was thinking about using accessible beige in that area too, or a slightly darker shade of it. But the bedroom is not big, would it make the bedroom appear smaller?

IF you want to keep the 10' ceiling in the shower, consider stopping one kind of tile you're choosing for the shower at the 8' or 9' mark and then use a solid white tile above that -- and do at least consider creating a an overhanging horizontal trim all around the shower at the 8' or 9' height -- of your preferred shower tile -- so that, if you later deem it necessary or desirable, you could easily add a (glass) ceiling above the shower to hold the heat in winter. If there is a light being installed overhead, then that ceiling likely would need to be glass unless you're just enclosing and wasting the higher space.

I would do a 9’ ceiling it nice requires no added expense either at build time or for heating and cooling. Your recessed lighting will also function better for lighting the space.. I would however spend the money to take the cabinets to the ceiling

I designed a low profile tray ceiling for someone a while back, you can take a look [Here[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/custom-designs-and-model-renderings-contemporary-new-york-phvw-vp~28679795) to get an idea it has a few tiers which can be made larger in size especially in your case with a high ceiling.

Or something like this

This type of ceilings can be designed and done many different ways, there is also already made molding molds which can make a tray ceiling.

We have tray ceilings in our breakfast/family room. I would never choose them. They dictate the footprint of your floorplan and that's a pain someday when you want to reconfigure your living space. Something people don't think about much. I would opt for coffered every time.
