You mention doing extensive interior remodeling. I'd urge you to take a long, hard look at what you will have after the extensive remodeling and compare it with what you would have if you tore down or gutted and started over. Ask a realtor what you could get for the house as it is; the remodeled house; a new one. Our 1950's ranch had no insulation in the walls, tiny baths and closets, an 8-foot ceiling, old 'innards' (plumbing, HVAC, etc.), old windows. It was a plain brick rectangle. Our new house is tight, has large baths and closets, a 9-foot ceiling, all new mechanicals and windows that are virtually soundproof. It has style. It cost little more to build new, but the new house has marketable value. Had we just 'rearranged the deck chairs' the cost would have been much greater than any increase in market value. If you only want to hang some shutters and tack on a covering over the front door -- maybe plant some shrubs to cover the foundation -- that's fine. I am indebted to you for telling me about Sherwin William's Snap it! It produced 2 pallettes, 1 with greens, a dark brown and a black. I really like SW9038 Cucuzza Verde green for the walls. The second pallette was all shades of gray, which I agree is too depressing for this simple building. I wanted to let you know about https://www.sessions.edu/color-calculator/. I entered in the RGB numbers for SW9038 Cucuzza Verde and it gave me complimentary, monochromatic and analogous colors. I was looking for a door color. The complimentary color was purple. What cheery door color do you think would go good with green?

Beverly's top post with the before and after has my vote! It might not be as major as the others, and it looks fantastic. It also looks very current and not so much like anyone else's house (like the other ones with the gables seem to me). You can keep the roofline (save $$$)! A flat window may be cheaper than a bow window replacement? Even the entrance on the new design looks current. Very chic... Maybe then there'll be budget for landscaping?Makes a HUGE difference.

IMO those columns are needed to support the roof. As for a portico i don’t see an easy way to do that but a new siding color would be my first choice and this is one of my faves for trim and siding with brick . BTW I think pianting brick is the fasteset way to devalue a house so only as a last resort if the brick is in bad shape, the shutters are all wrong for those windows .
