Comments (11)Since the plant must drain, the closure of the drainage hole(s) by its roots must be seen as trouble. It does appear the plant is crying out for a re-potting and since it is causing problems, the need to wait until spring sunshine is not what it should be waiting for; re-pot now. Make sure the soil drains well...but does retain some moisture. For that, possible use of a heavier than usual percentage of peat moss might be considered. It holds on to moisture longer and mixed with any of the good mediums....vermiculite, coarse sand, perlite and potting soil/mix the plant might do better. Repotting of course is going to show what extent the roots are in. If you are considering a total re-soiling, then I suggest you remove all the old soil, wash the roots clean and inspect for any sign of damage there. A barrier between the drainage holes and the soil will prevent somewhat the reoccurrence of the roots making it to the drainage holes. Stones of size, or shards of clay might be used. I like the broken clay shards because they leave important spaces so that water can drain well, yet block the path of soil that can plug up the hole. Go up one size only...repotting to a pot too large for the roots---even tho they have expanded--can cause future problems. Its alright to remove what roots are superfluous. Ferns, generally all, like their water and they can sometimes drop a measure of debris that makes the plant or the floor its sitting on, unsightly. But, in winter, even ferns don't grow all that much and need less water. A constant vigil by testing the soil dampness is one way to avoid underwatering/overwatering. Ferns too appreciate light....just not direct light. Give your plant more than usual at this time but give it a filter when the time comes the light intensity resumes. Mid February is the time we usually allow that plants begin to start growing. Its the time that geraniums and their ilk, come out of their cool storage to resume their voyage to summr sun. Until April tho, the sun takes its time to come up to light that influences greatly plants in windows and on window sills. Common sense should prevail. Comments (9)We call that recipe Mustard Pickle - great on ham, beans, turkey, etc. You can it in the summer when the vegetables are plentiful or in the early fall when you have plenty of green tomatoes and then have it for eating all winter and spring. Comments (35)I'm a little late but I'd like to add, tada, Crab Spread 8 oz. cream cheese 1 can crabmeat, drained and sorted bottle of chili sauce or seafood sauce, the red stuff, like Red Gold, Heinz, etc Mush the cream cheese and crabmeat together. Pack the mixture into a tupperware container, such as a bowl, or loaf shape. Or just shape it into a loafy mound. Dump the chili sauce and garnish with crackers. Laugh, but it's good. Oh yeah, you can add scallions, or other stuff to doctor it up. That strawberry salsa sounds like the beginning of something pretty good. Perhaps add some chopped onion, small touch of balsamic. Tupperware was out of my financial reality. I splurged on a couple of nice and well made things, but for the most part, it was too expensive for me. I loved my old orange juice container where I used to reconstitute frozen o.j., just add water, cover and shake. Used it every day as the only juice we drank was orange....See Morespeaking of retro
Comments (14)When I was a kid, my mother sometimes used to quarter a head of iceberg and slather it with her special dressing...which was sort of a Thousand Island, but not really. I always figured that she did it when she was just too freakin' tired to make a real salad...though I liked it. I still like it every so often, but really, iceberg lettuce doesn't have a whole lot in the way of flavor or nutrients, so yeah, it's basically a vehicle for dressing. Mom's Dressing 2 c mayo 1/2 c ketchup 1/4 c Worcestershire 1 T grated garlic 2 t lemon juice 1/2 t black pepper 1/2 t powdered onion 1 T honey 1 t each dried savory, parsley, & basil Mix all ingredients well. It should sit for at least a couple of hours in the fridge so the garlic won't be "hot" and the flavors of the dried herbs can develop, but if it can sit for longer, like all day, it's better....See MoreUser
