Strange fern behaving strangely

I was recently at a garden center in Chicago and picked up an adorable silvery-fuzzy fern labeled "Wooly Lipfern." Now that I have found it online (Cheilanthes tomentosa) I'm not sure if they should have been selling alongside the houseplants. Still, I want to give it a chance. I can't find any information on it in the Ferns forum, so I'm hoping one of you houseplant experts can help.

This baby is potbound like nobody's business. I noticed when I brought it home that the roots are actually coming out of the drainage holes and have formed a matted clump beneath the pot... clearly this is not good. Despite online information saying this fern is "very drought tolerant," this plant is completely dry after one day. Even with two humidifiers running, the fronds curl up and turn brown if I don't water it daily. Should I repot now, or wait until spring? Any further advice on caring for this little weirdo?
