Comments (8)Depends on what you want. I happen to LOVE Amelanchier, but it is no way as showy with the flower display of the crepe/crape? myrtle. On the other hand, Amelanchier looks great in the fall and has cool berries that attract birds, so maybe a little more "3 season" interest. In my experience, the best thing to do when trying to decide about plant selection is to think about the plant and how it will perform all year around, so take into account not only it's showy features but its winter silhouette, form, maintenance, etc. I love both Amelanchier and Crape Myrtle. The myrtle has a long, showy bloom season but is ho hum the rest of the time. Amelanchier is nice most of the time, nothing spectacular at any particular time, but nice overall. To me the virbirnum are a total bore in the winter and when not in bloom or berry, but nice when in bloom and again in fall with foliage and berries. So it depends on how this plant will fit in with whatever else is going on in your garden....See More2 br w/garage or 3 br no garage?
Comments (24)Thanks everyone, you've given me a lot to think about. Now I'm leaning back towards the 2 br w/garage. The 2 br w/garages in this area seem to be in better areas. I am also looking at duplexes which seem to be over my price range, but the benefit of no assessments really pays off. The assessments around here go from anywhere from $150-300. I was also considering dividing a master bedroom like some of you have suggested..there are some websites which sell room dividers so that could be an option....See MoreSmall home for a large family
Comments (27)"Here is a question...what is it called when you have a look of a saltbox on the front but not steep roof line in the back...just the same façade as the front..." Hi Jennifer, In answer to your question.... I am attaching a drawing (a picture is worth 1,000 words) depicting a soft drop in bearing heights, using an 'uneven bearing' truss. This is the terminology our firm used, but other vendors may refer to the condition as something else. Anyway, you can achieve the same goal using stick frame construction, but trusses alleviate the need for interior bearings. Different roof pitches, front & back on the same roof is referred to as dual pitch . The exterior of the roof shown in my example IS NOT a dual pitch, but it could be. My point is that you can control both the exterior of your roof and the interior of your ceiling heights to gain more room inside and control roof lines outside. This design, a little something I was playing with to learn Revit shows the use of trusses in combination with stick framing. Also ... while I realize you are heading in another direction with your design, that quick footprint I posted for you in our first conversation bothered me after I studied it a bit, so I tweaked it to soothe my own subconsciousness mind. Given the fact that the drawing is done, I thought I'd share the results with you. The closet space isn't what it was in the original layout, but the 2 minor bedrooms are bigger. Hope you found this information useful....See MoreSmall house and garage; big stink (Dog was skunked)
Comments (8)I found this by mistake, but completely agree with the tomato juice (or tomato anything) is useless -- just looks like a mess and the smell is all there when you rinse it off -- and thatt he hydrogen peroxide/baking soda method is the way to go. I have used baby shampoo as well as Dawn. One year, my dogs got hit 4 times -- the worst one of them on our driveway at the front corner or our house. The skunk was between a bush and tree trunk and got startled when the dogs came anxiously down the driveway for their evening walk. I was at the far end of the house and didn't hear DH yell for me, so he came through the house with the dogs. My car was parked right there and the smell seeped in. I tried airing it, wiping it down, but it was still smelly. I put a couple of open boxes of baking soda in the car and left it closeed up for a while and then lit a couple of scented candles and let them burn (carefully placed, windows open and monitored) for an hour or two. That took care of the final bit. All I could do for the house was turn on the range hood, spray some Febreeze and light some candles, but that worked. Our next door neighbor had dogs come in the house after being sprayed (babysitted didn't know what the smell was -- thought something was burning and alled the fire dept). They had to replace a sofa and carpet -- that I know of. If you still have skunk in the garage, I would spray or wipe down any surfaces you can and hose, mop or wipe with a clean cloth. Use baking soda (poured in some pans ofor more surface area) and as long as you can keep an eye on them, maybe try a couple of scented candles too. Like you, I keep a specially designated bottle of hydrogen peroxide and box of baking soda near the back door. The Dawn is right there too since our side door comes into the kitchen betwen our two sinks....See Moremiss lindsey (She/Her)
