Contrasting the slanting wall might be interesting. Much depends on the size of the room and how bright it is. Given the choice of wall or ceiling color, I would choose wall as I have seen it done that way. White would be too stark.

I don’t think there is a right or wrong way, if you google slanted walls and ceilings and click on images, you’ll see why I say that. However, IMO, I think the best result would come from painting the ceiling and walls in colors that are close to each other. For example, painting a walls, including the slanted parts in blue or gray and then the ceiling in the next lighter color on the strip or even the same color only at 50%.

My rule of thumb is that the ceiling is basically another wall, so I like to compliment it with a color other than white.

I don't think the label matters. Even if the room had only walls and ceilings perpendicular to one another, only at 90 degree angles, you could still paint a wall (a vertical wall) white as far as I'm concerned. If it were my bathroom, I would paint any large surface not strictly vertical in white. Another reason - white works on overhead surfaces to make them look farther away (higher) and the room larger. Painting a sloping ceiling the wall's color loses that effect.

No matter what color you paint the slanted walls, they will appear a slightly different color than the same paint on the vertical walls or the ceiling.

It sounds to me as though the slanted surfaces are walls, not ceiling.

Those slants, if in a master bedroom (for example), would be referred to as a cathedral ceiling. Or, if the slant were only on one side, it would be called a vaulted ceiling. Right?

I'm in the camp that doesn't like white ceilings. In DH's study, the ceiling is a very high tray and I painted it a darker color than the walls to help bring the ceiling down, more in proportion with the rest of the room.

Annie To The Rescue! The photo of the MBR is closest to my configuration.

The MBA is 14 X 11 (plus entry and closet alcoves). Imagine that the headboard wall in the photo is 12 feet high. My flat portion ceiling is wider than in the photo. It's surface is about 11 X 8 and the surfaces of the slanted portions are each about 11 X 3. The 'headboard' wall has large archtop window over a tub alcove that is 7 X 5. Flanking the tub on this north wall are toilet room and shower. Opposite wall (south) has center entry flanked by sinks.

Some here know that we were on Maui when the painters came to do drywall repair and paint. When we returned, we discovered that they had mistakenly painted the entire MBA one color (BM Sheraton Beige). They are returning to rectify this, but I want to get it *all* right this time.

I'm happy with this *wall* color, but I don't know if it's enough to just re-do all the trim. Presently, *everything* that isn't tiled or a fixture (white porcelain) is now Sheraton Beige: Walls; ceilings; 4" door casings and doors; 8" baseboards, and 4" window casings -- and the (stiles?) between the (42) individual panes of glass in the archtop window, and(16) in two casement windows on the west side.

All other ceilings in our home are 'ceiling white'. All other trim in the house is BM Linen White.

The archtop and two casements let in a lot of light, but it is mostly North light. I've had to up the lumens of the bulbs in our sink sconces so DH can see to shave. They and one light fixture suspended from the flat ceiling provide most of the artificial light in the room.

(I was mistaken earlier, saying the MBA had a 16-foot ceiling; it's 12. The library's cathedral is 16 -- and white.

With a configuration like the MB Annie posted, I would probably use something more like BM White Dove then the Linen White and I would use it on all the trim and the ceiling portions to keep it simple. Maybe it’s just the screen but to me, Sheraton and Linen are too close in shades where as the White Dove would provide a clean but crisp and fresh contrast. As you can see in the samples, the ceiling white, is pretty brash where as White Dove is more creamy and soft. Kind of offers the best of both worlds if you want white ceilings.

Thanks, everyone. I think I am not going to repaint *any* of the flat ceilings or the slanted parts. I'll just have them repaint the doors, windows, trim.
