Ceilings Worth Another Look
Wood, Pattern, Metal and Light Make Your Fifth Wall Shine
Most of us have drywall ceilings that we painted white and forgot about. The thinking is that the white will make the room feel bigger, and once it's painted, the ceiling is supposed to disappear. I think our ceilings have loads of untapped potential and would like to show you some alternate materials.
Warm wood. I love a nice wood ceiling. Wood automatically provides warmth and a secure feeling of structural integrity. Adding this material to the ceiling is both luxurious and cozy.
Finished plywood. An incredibly cost efficient way to get a woody look for the ceiling is to install plywood sheets. With a polyurethane finish and attractive lighting, plywood takes on a high-end feel.
Surprise pattern. Wallpaper offers a simple way to jazz up the white painted drywall ceiling. This works very well in a small space such as a powder room.
Painted stripes. Painting a pattern such as stripes on the ceiling is a bold way to add visual interest to the space you stare at as you lay in bed.
Metal tiles. Tin ceiling tiles add an antique look and is a welcome alternative to typical dropped ceiling grids with ceiling tiles.
Metal sheets. For a more industrial look, currogated metal sheets are used as the ceiling material in this tall space. The more rust the better.
Added dimension. One of the nicest touches you can add to your ceiling is a dropped soffit. It provides different ceiling heights and different lighting opportunities.
This is another version of a soffit with gold leaf from which a chandelier drops.
Lighting. Soffits go hand in hand with cove lighting. The more lighting options in a room (direct, indirect, cove lighting, dimmable lighting) the more you can adjust the light levels to your particular needs. Soffits allow you to add more lighting options without one plane of the ceiling getting too busy.
