Calling all John Davis owners!!

Please help to all of you who own this lovely rose!!!! I am planting 2 John Davis along a fence that faces South. I have a bed that is 4 feet deep and 12 feet long. I am planning on planting a JD 2 feet in from the East edge, spacing 4 feet and then planting another JD. I do not want to peg these to the fence which will be 5 1/2 feet high. I am hoping to make them free standing until they throw long canes which will then string along the top of the fence and over it.

Would you put JD 2 feet out from the fence or closer? I know that he mildews if he gets too close to a wall... The plants I got are huge own root bare roots from a local nursery. I have to get this right the first time because once they are in, they are there to stay. :) Please help!!! Thanks!!

IME, John Davis is more of a shrub than a climber. Those long canes take years and years to develop. So I'd plan on growing it as a medium sized shrub, and for that your bed may not be deep enough.

Since people like to describe hybrid teas are hardy to zone 4, you really have to buy repeat blooming roses listed as hardy to zone 3 to get roses that are hardy to zone 5. The rules are different for once bloomers. I've had roses listed as 5b make it through -30 without any problems. It doesn't make sense, but a lot about current rose growing doesn't make sense.

Cooks1818, I think I asked this in your other thread, but I'm repeating the question here so others can weigh in as well.... on what basis do you believe the doors get really hot? I haven't been able to find a "live" AR (or frankly, any other) oven so have no way to compare, but I'm really interested in the AR. Because it would go into a really small kitchen though, I really don't want something that will heat the entire kitchen to 450 when I'm baking! Thanks for sharing your experience!

donnay - congrats! how exciting - I was asking about the size because we got the 30" and that was where the differences were noted in the specs. My hubby was able to move the outlet easy enough once the range was here but we had placed it according to the drawing. Not a biggie just wanted you to be aware. Also keep in mind, if it is at floor level there is also some height to the legs that gives clearance too. mcferg - glad your burners were an easy fix! Sounds just like something I would do too. amg - great news for you too! Did you place the order! Hope thing progress along nicely for you. Hello to everyone else! Just used STT's SB sealer on the White Thassos tile/border mosaic tile in our MB. It's only been installed/in use a couple of weeks, so can't attest to its performance, but it was very easy to use, and little if any odor. I'd used Porous Plus on our guest bath tile and it left the travertine floor tile smudgey and smeary (don't remember if it did the same on the marble lining the niche or the other tile). It definitely had a strong odor as well. I'd posted a thread asking for a good sealer to use in the other two bathrooms since I wasn't enamored of the PP. SB was recommended, as well as 511's impregnator, and rococogurl recommended AKEMI Nano. Bill V. sent me over to the John Bridge forum to ask about the AKEMI sealer. A few of the guys there really touted the SB and I decided to use that after some back and forth posts about it, and a phone call to the company (spoke to the owner/creator himself). If it works as well as preventing stains as it is easy to use, we'll be happy.

Mad Gallica, thanks for your response!! Would you mind telling me how deep your bed is or how wide your JD gets? It doesn’t matter if they “spill over” into the brick walkway. There is a total of 7 feet before they hit the patio.

I have 5 John Davis roses in front of a 24' long fence & they survive my z4 winter temps BUT the rabbits always seem to girdle enough of the canes that I have to prune about +80% of the canes back down to the crown each spring so the hedge never has been very nice. My bed is 5' wide so the roses are 2 1/2' from the fence.

Thank you, Wirosarian!!! That is exactly the information I needed to know. We have rabbits, too. Surviving cane roses are a delicacy in the winter AND snow cover gives them a boost up to get to the middle portion of the canes. I think I will fence my 2 roses over winter to about 3 feet. That should be enough to cover them. Thank you for that heads up. I wouldn’t have thought of it otherwise!!

I too would put them 2 or 3 feet out from the fence to get plenty of air. I think caging around their bases in winter is a great idea.

Thank you, Sheila!!! It helps so know I am on the right track. John Davis did mildew when up against a wall on a trellis in my back yard. He is getting moved to a roomier spot back there. I am replacing him with Felix Leclerc.

This location by the fence is the worst for wind and cold in the winter. It will be a true test of the hardiness of John Davis. I will use Ivory soap chunks to keep the rabbits away in the spring and summer, but the cages have to go on over the winter, I’m thinking. I want to start them out right, though, so all this information is very helpful.
