One more question. I'm curious today.
Comments (11)My dog just died. His name was Jack Hollywood. I'm getting ready to plant these next weekend as soon as I figure out how to make the wire root cages to keep the voles from profiting at my expense and breaking my heart: On Stage Hollywood Lights Marilyn Monroe (for the beautiful blonde cocker mix next door, whom he loved) I have a row of family plants: Butch NR, a gift from Butch Ragland, in honor of a previous dog, Butch Limey Lisa & Lisa Marie (the latter smaller this year than last; I'm worried) Jon's Song got killed by the voles and I'm very upset; it's not commercially available. Golden Tiara and Emerald Tiara for another dog, our Queen Sophie Marie Sweet Home Chicago, because it was our hometown The only dog left out is Heidi Delilah, a German breed; I guess 'Lederhosen' would do but I'd rather have something smaller and closer to her name. I also have jonquils (okay, just daffodils) for my partner. I have roses for my grandmother Rosalie ('Peace' and 'Chicago Peace' - she had regular peace and 'JFK' but 'Chicago Peace' didn't exist in her time) and daylily 'Judith' for my mother. Old House Garden sold me hyacinth bulbs named 'Marie' and 'Madam Sophie', and made 50% good on it when the first crop all died because they were in pots, as they neglected to put a warning in their planting instructions that you can't grow these heirloom hyacinths it pots. Here is a link that might be useful: Old House Gardens - Antique Bulbs 'Marie' & 'Madam Sophie'...See MoreOkay - I'm old - just shoot me now!
Comments (141)Sue, I'm not sure who you are asking, but I can give a few reasons why I like the Thanksgiving get together so much. For one thing, it isn't preceded by trying to figure out what presents to buy. I love buying things for my children & grandchildren "on-the-fly," all throughout the year. But birthdays and Christmas are more difficult for me simply because gifts are expected. So it requires a lot more thought and planning. Secondly, I love the decor of Thanksgiving. The cornucopia filled with gourds, dried ears of corn, Autumn leaves, etc. I get out my Pilgrim and turkey candles and my husband and I "argue" about lighting them up when the family arrives. It's an ongoing joke that has now become tradition. I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable, but I love the few hymns specifically associated with Thanksgiving. So I enjoy banging out "Come, ye thankful people, come" on my piano and singing along. Or maybe I should say, croaking along. I really like the fact that Thanksgiving isn't as commercialized as Christmas. There's no "Thanksgiving" music blaring in every store. Very few, if any, TV specials. There isn't a 3 month prelude of Thanksgiving stuff -- activities, music, media, etc. It's still a rather simple holiday. Also, I honestly do like the meal, even though ours is never as elaborate as many other forum members. And I really like the turkey scrapple I make with the carcass. My husband and I look forward to eating it for breakfast....See MoreFloof! Do you "cart judge?"
Comments (77)years ago i fed my 3 great danes a raw diet which consisted of a LOT of chicken. i always watched for leg quarters to go on sale and when they did, i'd buy a cartful. i also had the grocery store butcher get me 40# boxes of turkey necks every few weeks. i often had people make the comment, "wow, you must really love chicken". i'd smile and say yes and leave it at that. one time, the person behind me was making a big deal about all of the chicken in my cart. it was very annoying and i wasn't about to tell her it was dog food. the cashier, however, saved me the trouble of explaining when she said (loud enough for everyone around me to hear) "oh, she doesn't eat that all herself, she feeds it to her dogs". i was mortified to think there could have been someone within hearing distance that might be struggling to feed their family and there i was, buying 100# of chicken for my DOGS....See MoreFloof-ish! Comments (38)Before if I had this issue I could call SO to bring me food. But the place I work is a secure place and you need special clearance to get in, and he lost that clearance when he stopped coming through here for work. I cannot leave when I get here since I am the only person in this department for those 12 hours, and no deliveries are allowed. I just sucked it up. Kathsgrdn your potluck tales make me giggle. Lots of times other departments will have some sort of party or special meal for themselves. Sometimes its not meals but just something special like cake or doughnuts. They always bring me something. Always. I never know when they are planning something and I am never asked to bring anything because as they put it I cannot actually join them for the party because I cannot leave my area for very long at all. But they always bring me something. There are 4 different shifts. I work with 2 sets of them regularly, because everyone else rotates from days to nights but we do not. I work with the other two when I am filling in for coworkers. All 4 shifts will bring me something from their parties. They do not do that with any of my coworkers or supervisor and it just grinds their gears. And they are annoyed to hear how happy the other workers are when they see that I am here instead of them. I think its funny that they do not understand why. Its very easy and much more pleasurable to be nice and friendly to people. It is so much easier to be easy to work with and helpful than standoffish and lazy. And its better to try to have a little fun an laugh a little bit when you are working for 12 hours than to grump and whine that you are there. And when you are that way to the people around you, especially ones you work with, and more especially when they are 99.9% men, you get free cake and unsolicited doughnuts and an occasional grilled steak and baked potato. (I feel like women feel more obligated to include everyone in order to not be perceived as witchy with a b, and men do not really care like that. They are going to reciprocate both kindness and rudeness) It probably helps that I do the decorating and treats for the holidays, which they all enjoy, while the others in my department kinda make snarky remarks about it. I enjoy sending my less fortunate coworkers pictures of the treats I get when I am here. :) I do not eat "potluck" food but I will for sure enjoy a steak I see them grilling fresh right across the road from me........See Moreamylou321
