DIY mudroom tile - subfloor advice needed (Bill V, Mongo, etc.)
Comments (2)Also, I know we can't put down SLC over the glue that's on the slab currently. Frankly, I'm concerned about using SLC successfully anyhow - we have two doorways and two staircases to work around. Can we do something else to level the floor? It's not terribly uneven. What about installing cement board with thinset? We could use the Laticrete 254 Platinum (or whatever product you recommend) and level the floor with the thinset. Would that work? I don't think cement board is normally recommended for concrete floors, but if it's feasible I think it might be the best bet....See MoreWhat floor to install over vinyl asbestos tile in basement?
Comments (11)OK then! :) My stupid floors are kind of uneven, though. Does that make a difference for the engineered hardwood? I should add that although we've never had any problems, the previous HO (original HO) did install a basement waterproofing system. It could certainly have been paranoia on her part, and I've never known our sump pump to run in almost three years, but I thought I'd put that out there. Many basements in my area DO have flooding issues, which is why I am somewhat paranoid. The rest of my house is hardwood though, and I vastly prefer that. I have always hated carpet. If you know of any good deals on EH, I'd be very interested in at least pricing it out. Is it something I can install myself?...See MoreVinyl Asbestos Tile- can I keep it?
Comments (1)I have the same situation. As long as the tile remains intact there is no 'asbestos' danger. The problem comes if you sand or otherwise disturb the solid state. Don't worry. There was a very lengthy thread on here if you search for it. If I recall some people were quite alarmist but my brother works for an asbestos abatement company and if you do nothing there is nothing to worry about....See MoreMoisture under vinyl asbestos tile
Comments (21)Thanks David. I climbed up in the crawlspace above our basement and snapped this photo of the subfloor. There’s a small chance the Black stuff is mastic from the tub, but then There’s that teal stuff too... The plywood never changed colors like that, I suspect some of the other posters were correct in assuming that I awoke a previous issue more so than doing all of this damage in such a short period of time. I believe by “selective demo” and “minor surgery” some are implying that I may just be able to deal with the boards that are damaged? I‘m not sure the whole subfloor needs to be replaced up there, but I think those tiles are going to have to come up just to let me get to these. It seems like the whole job requires different skill sets, I don’t even know who to call first! Mold guy to assess damage? Then abatement guy so I can get to it? Then Someone to actually replace subfloor? Lol, what have I gotten myself into!...See Morecolonialgp
