Slip= connector fitting with no threads, used for hard pipes like PVC Barb= used to insert into hose and can also adapt hard pipe to hose Sounds like you should bring the pump to the hardware store and look for not a 1" barb but, a 1 1/4 to achieve a higher flow. Aslo see if you can get threaded unions to remove the pump for service or you will be cutting pipes and disturbing the plumbing to remove it later. Are you going to use the black corrugated hose, PVC or what? Do not use the soft silicone hoses, they will collapse and cruch as soon as they get a chance.

(sigh) I get busy for a while and miss out on so much excitement. I hope she hasn't left but if Michelle (or whoever s/he is) left for whatever reason, I give her (/him?) kudos for not doing like so many who post a "storm out" post reminiscent of Beaver Cleaver I'm running away from home... and I ain't not never coming back! looking for the pleading of please stay, don't go, only to be back posting a short while later and usually making a big announcement post how they have forgiven the forum, presumably to get yet more attention. It has produced some new growth at the top and at the short stub at the right. It still doesn't look right to me. The new growth on the short stub also has a dark green/brown color. I've put the cutting in the shadow. What's wrong overhere? See photo. @Peter, dry rot might be possible. I don't know really. Should I try some hydrogenperoxide? Edit: I don't trust it at all. I've removed it from my collection and swabbed it with h2o2. Does someone have any pointers about how to progress from here? Can it be saved?

You're very welcome Ghazal :) Its great that you've noticed it does better with more light, always trust your instinct as the generic advice online is hard to apply to so many different scenarios. Calatheas don't do well in direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves, but in a north-west facing window it will largely receive indirect light and a small amount of weak sunlight when the sun is setting, so putting it next to the window should be great for it. As a tip for working out what is "bright, indirect light" try and find a place where your hand casts a fairly strong shadow, or where you can easily read a book without needing a light on. Direct sunlight is when the rays hit the plant. In terms of increasing humidity, theres a few things. You can add a little water to the pebble tray but do not let it reach the bottom of the pot as you don't want the roots to be sitting in water. As the water evaporates, it creates humidity. Buying a humidifer is another option if you want to, although probably not necessary until winter. Or placing it in or near the bathroom or kitchen where it will get some steam if that's an option. Grouping plants together if you have others always helps to increase humidity. Hope that helps! Also, in case you aren't aware - Calatheas are fussy about the minerals in tap water if you have hard water in your area. It's best to use distilled or rain water where possible, although I can't see any evidence of your plant not being happy with the water.
