I think relatives gave me money in high school, but I don't remember my parents giving me a specific gift. They would have considered 18 years of expenses my gift! Graduating high school was more an expectation than an achievement for them.

When I graduated college, we had a nice dinner out but no gifts. I went to college out of state and everyone flew out to watch, so I didn't expect or want gifts. Nice memories!

We got our DD a car 11 years ago for graduation from her first college degree. It's the best car purchase we've ever made. The car is still in perfect condition!

DD just gave it to her mother-in-law as she and SIL bought a jeep for off-roading. I'm not sure how long the Jeep will last. :!//

I got a mirror and $100 cash from my parents for high school graduation.

We haven't figured anything out for our ds who is graduating. He doesn't wear or need a watch. His cell phone tells him everything he needs to know. He doesn't need a new computer. He has a new laptop and he built his desk top. He needs clothes, but they are mainly impersonal and we already bought him a couple of college t-shirts.

How about a few shares of stock in a company that provides products or services your student enjoys. Set it up in a brokerage account so that he or she can monitor it and learn more about investing.

He's already got his mutual fund up and running (he's 18, so he's in charge of his funds, rather than when "his CD" was in my name), from funds he started saving at the ripe old age of 8. I made sure to teach him, the earlier the easier it is to retire. He's good to go there, but that's a good one fraker.

After high school I received a suitcase and carry-on of my very own, powder blue. :) I don't recall receiving anything after college graduation; I think the education was enough! After all our daughters graduated, they took trips on our dime.

Editing to say trips were after college, not high school.

If you can afford it, I'd say one practical gift like cash (either in or not in his "retirement account", his choice) and then something else he chooses. If my kids are any indication, don't expect him to look for a keepsake in the same sense others have described for their own experiences. I think today's young adults (especially boys) are the opposite of sentimental. They value good memories much more than things and like to "travel" light.

High school? They paid for the first semester of college.

I do not remember what we got our kids for high school grad, I wonder if they do? University grad was probably cash for them for something that was on their wish list which for my younger son was a camera.

HS grad gift: an electric typewriter with case! It was the mid-80s and I was going to be (and did graduate as) a journalism major. It got a LOT of use. I later sold it in the early 2000s to a coworker for $25!

College grad: don't recall. Was just thankful to have no loans.

Post-graduate degree: several keepsakes and some cash. I was just glad to be done!

I meant to tell you elmer (it's a really busy day today), he's incredibly sentimental. If you saw my Facebook post today, you'd see just how much. It's a letter to his "future child", an assignment they had to write yesterday. He's very romantic. Puts his parents to shame and we're both hugely sentimental. I think the stainless steel, engraved cufflinks are going to hit the spot. He really loves all the "icings" for his suits. One year for Christmas, he was most excited over a pocket square that had four different prints (and two sides. The exact one I've linked) on one cloth. And that was years ago (a really small kid).

I honestly don't remember what we gave our son for HS graduation - I'm sure there was a gift. DD got some antique diamond/pearl drop earrings which she wore with her long white graduation dress (private school). One set of grandparents gave her an Apple computer - the old all-in-one with the little black/wht screen - it was 1990.

College? DS desperately wanted a particular watch from his father and a custom made signet ring from us; he got both. DD got an antique silver wine cooler, a small 60" love seat for a first apt, and I upholstered two small wing chairs for her (yes, I DID do the upholstery myself!) first apt as well.

DGS is graduating this June and his birthday was in early April. I will be buying him a laptop for college when he gets there - better prices through the campus bookstore. This is for both his 18th Bday and graduation.

High school graduation gift was a typewriter and college was the sewing machine which I use to this day, both from my parents.

My sister gave me the biggest surprise - a Royal Doulton figurine for my HS graduation. When we'd go to the mall together I'd always spend time looking at the beautiful lady figurines at this one store. I was speechless when I opened it. When I graduated from college she offered to get me another, letting me pick it out myself this time. However, between my feelings over the price and my inability to make a decision as to which one to get, I never did get a second one. The figurine is in my china hutch, always in a very visible spot:)

He loved them. His father gave him his grandfather's class ring. He died many years ago, and the boy or named for him. All in all, a great night

I don't remember what my parents gave me, but my grandmother bought me an opal ring. I still have it and I still wear it. Every time I look at that ring, I think of her.

That's kind of cool that he wears suits to school. Do the other kids ever tease him about his style of dress?

I received a typewriter and tool box to take to college. I may have just gotten money when I graduated college.
