Gift ideas for Graduation? Help!
Comments (10)don't get him any unabridged dictionary that costs less than $50--they're just not good enough. The Merriam-Webster and Random House brand are good, but their unabridged are about $70. Just because it says "Websters" doesn't mean it's good. Believe me, I know about dictionaries bcs I'm a professional copyeditor, and every one I've seen that was inexpensive was not very good--not complete; includes stupid words--a waste of money. I like the Financial Freedom book Anita9 recommended, and if he weren't irresponsible, I'd second the vote for Tiffany stuff. What about suitcases? My family's standard h.s. graduation gift was a set of luggage--the ultimate "you're on your own" message! LOL. (but in our family, it really did have a meaning of ultimate grown-upness, since we moved up from sharing mom's suitcase to sharing w/ a sibling to having our own that was part of a 4-suitcase trunk, to borrowing our own of mom and dad's. having out own suitcase was a symbol for not needing permission to go anywhere.)...See MoreNeed graduation gift idea
Comments (25)LOL, I thought my brilliant idea — giving my son’s GF a nice overnight bag for graduation — was so unique and creative! Not so much, I guess! For her it’s extra appropriate since they will be living pretty far from each other for at least a couple of years. They’ve been seeing each other for 6+ years (since 11th grade), and for the duration of college have been about 6 hours apart and now will be even further from each other. Anyway, I got her a nice Kipling weekender bag. DS confirmed that she doesn’t have anything like it and that she would love it. My first thought was jewelry too but she doesn’t wear much, and the few small items she does wear are from DS. We have a few high school graduations coming up, too. For those I got Dr Seuss “oh, the places you’ll go” covered Tervis tumblers and inside the tumblers I’m putting gift cards to their respective college bookstores....See MoreGraduation gift for GD
Comments (12)I just wanted to say I'm going half-wit already with two graduations (both DD and DS) and two birthdays real close to graduations..I spent so much already and still not fully satisfied lol, and not sure they will be but your GD is younger. was easier a bit back then.. I'd vote a) jewelry b) interesting watch (I still keep my first pendant. And I wore my first watch for years until was beyond repair. Of course depends on a person..) It can be some fabulous book/s, yes-again depends on her interests I drag some books I got as a teen still with me...three countries, back and forth.. I'm very sentimental though, and I love books. She might be like me-then it's gift for life, even more so than jewelry Can be art too.. Can be special personalized..I don't know, quilt? Can be a toy..aha:) Again, depends. I slept with beloved soft toys until I got married( well, boys and soft toys..I didn't see much contradiction at that age lol) I still have them. My DD "borrowed" my favorite teddy bear (the only thing me and my ex were able to afford from Harrods lol..so his name is Harrods) and it lives in her room for years already, and she comes with her boyfriend often, and Harrods doesn't get banned either..from what I can judge.. oh wow. I went completely OT. sorry. as I said I'm not at the top of my mental capacities. I agree girls are easier..generally speaking College fund can be a great idea too. Smth small plus college fund contribution. (I did find smth hopefully meaningful for my son-we'll see how it goes..can't attest to its meaningfulness yet. )...See MoreGraduation season! Comments (11)Oh, I didn't mention that it's college graduation. I think he does want a particular programming tool or data management tool and I'm sure it will require a more powerful laptop. He currently lives at home and might continue to do so for a while, though DH and I have talked about him getting an apartment in town. But I think DS would find that a gift for us, not him! Lol! But, it really would be a gift for him, too. He's had an atypical four years, even before covid, and is finally " finding the on ramp on the road to his life". An apartment in familiar surroundings would be a good next step. (Lars, he earned himself a major scholarship for the final two years, as well as a campus job that was as good as an internship, and he actually still has college fund money left, so when he's ready he can go to grad school.) Here's how times have changed: when I graduated, I got a car. The guy I was dating got a computer. They cost the same. My car would cost triple that now, his computer would cost a a quarter of the price....See Moresocks
