Wisteria in a pot?

I potted a volunteer seedling off a larger Chinese Sinensis 2 seasons ago and it is finally taking off this year. I think it will "meet" the other one on the above arch support this year. I put it in a 13" pot at birth, but wonder if that will be large enough over time. Any experience with this woody vine in a pot? Should I re-pot to a larger pot while the main trunks of this teenager are still small and soft so I can lift it out of this pot? Or am I wasting my time trying this plant in a pot at all?

That is gorgeous! I love the shade it creates and even more the flowers in the spring. If it were me knowing how Wisteria will travel up the trees, through fences breaking boards and into buildings, I think I would leave it in the smaller pots and maybe let it get root bound, hoping to stunt and control it's growth. The one I've dealt with grows 3" overnight and when there are 20 runners it quickly takes over.

Crowding the roots might be a good ploy to take. I love this arch. Last year not so many blooms. This year, there were dozens dripping down across the top! No blooms on the baby yet however. I do have to stay on top of pruning it off my house roof, as the arch is at a corner and it love to jump on the roof. About once a month I climb the ladder and chop on that side. :) But I love wisteria and have always wanted one this size, so I'll keep her. The scent was so intense this year my husband came in and said "The neighbors must be growing jasmine or something". I said "Just look up next time you take the dog out back." He was astounded at the number of blooms this year. :) Took a picture but lost it with a computer crash a few days ago. Didn't have that one copied yet.

It's true that things come out of dormancy a bit early in the garage. That's not a problem if you don't put them outdooors too early! My garage overwintered plants always start showing signs of life in Feb. or Mar. I just give them some water about twice a month and leave them in the garage until it's safe the bring them out. I bring them out in early April but keep them in a sheltered spot where it's easy to throw some floating row cover over them if frost is in the forecast, but where they get rained on and exposed to sun and natural temperature fluctuations. The early start in the garage gets them off to a good start for the year as it gives them a longer growing season. The important thing is that the plants get a a natural cold-triggered dormant period but get necessary protection from winter temperature fluctuations and frost damage to vulnerable new growth in the spring. There are certainly multiple ways to do that - you just have to find the one that work best for you.

I have never had luck with them either. They are blooming in NorCal now and I wanna wear the flowers like a wig. I'm bald. Improvise. I hear they just need to be left alone to do their thing, not disturbing the roots. And its best to buy older nursery stock that's in bloom because they take awhile to work their magician younger. Fertilize with fish emulsion if you can stand the smell for a couple of days. I'm an inpatient gardener so my mantra kicks in of grow and be happy, or become mulch... I take photos of everybody else's wisterias or visit the ones I know bloom in front of this particular house in Santa Cruz.

Me me me!!! :D Sorry to say - this heat and no rain all summer in Chattanooga did my white one in that I got from you in the spring. I was rather sad - I had such high hopes for it. The purple one that I planted on the other side is doing wonderful...so I am at a loss as to why it didn't make it. But I sure would like to try again. Thanks! Tiffany
