Replacing shake, but what color should I do?

Hi there, my husband and I built a beautiful story and a half home out in the country last year and had to sell due to health reasons. We settled into a ranch in a sub-division but we bought one of the older homes in the neighborhood. When I say older I'm only talking 13 yrs old. We love the house but the exterior just isn't our style. We plan on keeping the siding color because it will be too costly to change. We are looking into changing up the exterior in other areas.

Better picture of the roof... it is more brown with some red in it.

Our plan is to change the current vinyl shake to a different style and color. We are thinking about going with a brown for the shake, possibly the Weathered Blend or Cedar Blend. It is Novik Vinyl Shake, that is what the contractor is using. I just can't think of anything else that will go with this siding color. The siding is a tan but has some peach undertones.

For the trim, I love white trim but I don't know that it will work here. Maybe an off white or cream? We will be picking colors from Sherwin Williams.

We do plan on replacing the stone with a product from Prestige Stone Products, it's a stone veneer.

We just like more of a classic, clean look. Tan isn't my favorite so I'm struggling with this one. I'm not a designer so any ideas and advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Save the money you would spend on the stone and replacing the roof and paint the siding a nice grey with white trim like your old house. The colors in both the stone and the roof will go nicely with the grey, you might choose a lighter tone of grey for the gables to show them off.

Thank you for your response. It is hard to tell from the picture but the stone really isn't attractive. It looks very dated compared to other homes in the neighborhood, and it has seen better days. I also don't know how I would feel about painting vinyl siding, does it fade fast? Replacing the stone really isn't too expensive, I would think painting the whole house might cost more. We are definitely keeping the roof and siding the same, just trying to work around them to make them look nicer.

Good morning KT friends. After a tossing and turning kind of night, I'll have to put last night and the stolen meds behind me.....with a HUGE lesson learned!! We will not be trusting of anyone again. Sad, isn't it? Yes, a big part of this is our fault, having the meds on a table out in the open, but we didn't expect any company. If any neighbors drop in, it during the daytime. There were no refills on the prescription, so that is all they will get from us, and I hope they choke on it. After talking to a couple neighbors, we think Shelly passed the pills off to a gal who is a caretaker to an elderly lady, and a real low-life type, so it was easy for her to sy the Police could search her APT, and we all know he can't unless he gets a warrant. I'm not shaking any more but I'm still really pi$$ed.

Lars, if I had your beautiful door, I'd have it the same inside and out as well. I don't know if I've ever seen the front of your house, but it looks fantastic with your interior. I love your colors BTW. My front door is white inside and out, as is the trim inside and out. However, I don't think I'd mind seeing a different color temporarily when I open the door. It's kinda like, oh hello, nice to see you. But I don't think I'd want that color all on its own inside my house. Your door is an exception.

You will inevitably hear people suggesting a full redo -- Houzz doesn't like stoves in islands. And venting is just one of the reasons. But if you don't want to do that, there are pretty decent overhead hoods that can vent through the roof. And this is possible even if you have cathedral ceilings. I suggest you post both photos and to-scale drawings of your place. You'll probably get better advice that way. Also, let us know what your budget is, what you would like to replace your Jenn-Air with (if that's getting replaced at the same time), and what is important to you when cooking.

Seems like no one is suggesting a picture window, so two windows it is. There are two patio doors that face a lake view. The patio doors are also viewed from the kitchen table. So I think changing this window to two casements would coordinate well with the patio doors. Having the windows crank out would be a plus for ventilation, but I realize it’s not ideal with the deck landing there. I’ll see if the Marvin Window salesman has some ideas for function, now that the aesthetics are decided.
