Downdraft exhaust ineffective...what should I do to replace it?

I have a 15 yr old Jenn-Air gas range in a kitchen island. It has a built-in downdraft exhaust between the L&R burners and is simply terrible as a kitchen exhaust. It sucks heat away from the burners while most smoke and odors escape into the room. The exhaust duct runs under the floor and vent through an outside wall about 10 ft away. The kitchen is in a "great room" common with the living room and dining area and has a cathedral ceiling. What are my alternatives short of a major redo of the cooking area?
