As far as I know, Dacor is the only one who currently makes a range that works with their pop-up downdraft. Another option is to get a cooktop and a pop-up downdraft and then put an oven under the range if you can find one that will fit. The final option is to just forget about venting - many people do although it's not a desirable option.

It's pretty simple to check. All you need is a candle. With the fireplace not burning, light a candle, hold it next to the water heater exhaust hood, and blow it out. The smoke should be sucked up the chimney briskly. Now do the same thing with a fire in the fireplace. If the candle smoke moves away from the water heater exhaust hood, you have a problem. Solving that could be as simple as opening a window to provide make up air for the fireplace. The downdraft from the chimney when it's cold is because it's cold. There's a plug of dense, cold air being held in place by the damper. When you open the damper, if you don't have a chimney with a naturally strong draft (most newer chimneys don't), you'll get a downdraft. Use the burning newspaper to reverse the draft BEFORE you get your duraflame going.

I have that exact Thermador downdraft model paired with a Thermador induction cooktop. It works surprisingly well but, of course, not as good as an old fashioned overhead hood. However, it works much better than the downdraft that was built into the Jenn-Air cooktop that it replaced. I'm sure you are aware of this but the blower is purchased separately so you need to account for it when calculating your total cost. I do not use the recirculation module as my house was built for a downdraft and was piped to vent down into the floor and then out the side of the house. When it was first installed it vibrated very badly except at the highest speed. After having Thermador out a couple of times we determined it was a faulty blower, it appeared as though it must've been dropped or suffered an impact of some sort prior to installation. They replaced it and all has been well since. I was very happy with the support I got from Thermador. I don't know anything about the Cattura but I do like that it has a built-in light. The Thermador does not have a light and there are times that I wish it did. Also, I like the look of the electronic controls on the Cattura. The Thermador has a simple analog knob with low, medium and high settings that you push to raise and lower the unit. It also looks like the Cattura is taller. The filters on the Thermador are designed to be just tossed into the dishwasher and reused, which is nice, whereas it looks like the filters on the Cattura need to be replaced every 3 to 6 months. I've never seen or heard of the Cattura so I couldn't tell you if the build quality and performance is on par with the Thermador.

We had an early 1980s downdraft electric cooktop, and once it caught fire, we decided it was time to replace it. :) There weren’t a lot of options that were the modern equivalent. We ended up installing an overhead vent hood and an induction cooktop. I loooove the induction cooktop because it’s SO easy to clean AND because it’s so responsive. I don’t think I’d ever prefer to cook with gas now.
